A rogue debt collection operation has just been shut down by a court-ordered injunction from a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit, according to Time magazine. The debt collection companies had farmed out collection calls to call centers in India, and collectors were engaging in illegal practices. It is the second such operation taken to court in the past two months by the FTC, after a similar operation was slapped with an FTC lawsuit in February. That suit was brought against the Ebreeze and American Credit Crunchers companies, both owned by Varang K. Thaker. Thaker and his operation, according to Bloomberg, were calling people and posing as police officers, threatening arrest and other legal actions. |

http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2012/02/24/india%E2%80%99 s-fake-debt-collectors-said-to-target-u-s-citizens/?mod=goog le_news_blog U.S. federal authorities have cracked down on a phone scandal in which Indian call centers allegedly were used to swindle millions of dollars out of Americans. Callers from the Indian centers, who posed as âphantom debtâ collectors, allegedly harassed U.S. residents with dire consequences like threats of arrest, a lawsuit or loss of their jobs, if they did not pay back a loan which they had never taken out, according to information released by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission earlier this week. |
