i worked with usps for an year the foot soldiers - post office ppl, distribution center ppl are very sincere about their job and are pretty hard working as we go up, it is similar to any desi govt entity like air india only a few mgrs are actually trying to do their job with full commitment and they are frequently cut out by ujeless incompetent ppl who are waiting for their retirement benefit to kick in or are sleeping in the same bed as outside contractors unless system is overhauled scope for improvement is very less my colleague's friend is the guy who did the research for them as an outside contractor and suggested to stop sat'day delivery Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,Humpty Dumpty had a great fall | ||

basky, Postal services are governed by international treaties. you cannot close them. if you do so, nobody will deliver mail to USA. Its a quidproquo service. so profit or loss there will be a postal service. if you save it, it will be vibrant and useful. My ideas: 1) start a Post off savings scheme. Like in India and Singapore. people can save money and it will have some tax credits. Post office can make make some money in float. 2) Sell Bullion coins Silver and Gold with limited editions. the premium can make some money. 3) Manage bill pay services. it occurs to me all bills are delivered by the postoffice. there got to be a way to manage that loop without we having to send the check. USPS is going to cut upto 35000 jobs a sad piece of news really. whenevr i goto a PO i cannot but admire how the USPS staff work tirelessly hour after hour. a few months back, we received a specially delivered letter from ths USPS. It seems the van carrying the letter met with an accident and the mail got burnt partially. they retrieved our letter, restored it quite well, laminated together all pieces and delivered it. just great people. how to save this great american institution. all ideas please. most of us here have lived/worked in multiple countries, we have seen various non-postal roles postal services play. we can put all those together and send the suggestions to the Post Master General.
