even pvt engineering college students from India do the same, when applying for MS. But our recommendation letters say...we are in top 5 in the class blah blah blah.... But here....top high schools lo nunchi kooda, only 1 or 2 students per university antay....unfair (for that matter, IIT too). US lo, konni high schools lo, easy gaa 8,000 students untaaru...meaning about 2,000 graduating seniors. | ||

For example....from this TJ...if dozen students apply to say MIT computer science...Only 1 or 2 students will be admitted. It doesn't matter how smart those dozen studends are. Hmm - most of my colleagues and friends kids have gone to college - some have taken a year or two break to save some money for college .. Army is a different thing - its a secure career - they start earning immediately and have a lot of incentives, free education in the nations's top schools like Westpoint Stevens etc.. Education for value of education is a luxury of the rich...For all else ,it all boils down to cost benefit analysis A good parallel is me - I made the choice not to go for masters cos I got a good job after B.Tech - why spend 2 years studying when I could earn money and gain experience that counts more than an M.Tech, was my rationale- I did not think of the intangible value of masters either Beauty is life when life unveils her holy face. U have take two extreme cases to compare.. how can u compare a top rated public college tuition with a high rated private school here? Here are the attributes to compare: Per-capita-income of an Indian(read as a middleclass), tuition fee of a bachelors degree in private college(as only 10% get public seats).. for eg, if u take a clerk in a firm is earning 20K a month on average, he earns 1.2lacs per year.. and he has to pay atleast 30-40K rupees each year for college of one child... how can u say Indian education is cheap? U must be talking about olden days for sure.. my Nephew is studying in BITS in Hyd and we pay 2lacs per annum including mess charges.. How many of us in india would have gone to college in india if we though we will have to work for years to pay off that debt ? Majority of desis fall in the same range. no offense but this is pure BS IMO. there are some good r&d centers in desam like ccmb, iisc, tata r&d center etc. But what did they produce? Tcs, infy, wipro etc are making billions of dollars yoy... not one comes up with a product (closest was Infy's pinacle i guess)... we see tons of new IT products, technologies coming up everyday... with so many IT engineers n IT companies we should be churning these products everyday... but not seen one till date. I don't understand why these desi IT gaints can't build a simple tool like Informatica, Business objects or load runner etc. Irony is most of these tools are built by desis working in these companies... And some colleges do give you credit for the courses so if the kid can handle the courseload - its good to take them .. But AP courses are intense - less teaching more research and working on your own atleast in my son's school ... They have to study day and night all these four years of HS. I heard some kids go into depression as well if they dont get into these ivy league schools.
