he cannot probably recognize that it is a dog. they are basically smell driven, and then sound driven. for example, you throw a ball for him to fetch. he uses eyes to see where it lands. once he reaches the spot it landed then he uses smell to locate it. also, they do not see the same colors. they see blue well. if you wear red/black/green perhaps shades of gray. my dog thinks a toy is his own pet/friend. when he is happy he grabs it and plays with it or talks to it. okay here is the update. this AM as soon as he got up, he sat on his seat by the window and started looking for me to return even before I left for work!! Usually he tails my wife till 9.00 which is when he gets his breakfast. today, right on the sofa. when I cam back from work today, I had the toy with me. he took it, sits away in his place and stares at me. wow dad, you are great!! I took him to Fedex and Staples in my van. He stayed in the car patiently for about an hour. While coming back, I told him, tomorrow I will buy you a toy, I am late today, sorry bud. When we reached home, he sniffed the bags, my pockets, my hands etc looking for the "toy". Then I told him, I will buy "tomorrow" and made some hand gestures that it is going to come. he went away happy and played with his current toys. I have to see what he does tomorrow.
