In a decision that could radically change the game in the Tamil movie industry (and possibly other south Indian film industries), the Tamil Producers Council has decided to ban release of big films during normal days. Big films will now be allowed to release only during festivals. The Council says that the move is aimed at protecting the interests of small movies. Sankranthi, Tamil New Year, May Day, Independence Day and Deepavali have been designated as festival days and big films will be allowed to release only during these days. This move has shocked many people and sharply divided opinions are being heard on the matter. While many small producers are extremely happy, others are calling the move unfair. There is also no clarity as to how a movie will be designated ‘big film’. The biggest immediate casualties of this decision are Karthi’s ‘Saguni’ and Dhanush’s ’3′. Already, many small producers in the Telugu Film Industry are calling for a similar move in our industry.
