This question has eluded Telugu film industry all these days because megastar Chiranjeevi occupied the slot. Now that Chiranjeevi is all set to launch his new political party next month, the question of who will fill his position gains ground. All these years, there has been a legacy of superstars in Telugu film industry. If it was NTR and ANR in the good old days, Krishna and Shobhan Babu succeeded them later. After that, Chiranjeevi filled the slot for almost one and a half decades. Balakrishna, Nagarjuna and Venkatesh were closely behind him. Though Chiranjeevi has been treated as number one by the industry and media, there have been occasional protests from persons like Mohan Babu. But, Chiranjeevi has mastered the art of maintaining the balance between different groups within the industry and restraining himself from being provoked. True that there are more than one contender for the super star slot, in case Chiranjeevi vacates it in later part of this year. But, there will be fight between two heroes - Mahesh Babu and Pawan Kalyan - for the coveted status. These two stars will slug it out to prove their mettle in the comings months. First trial of test between the two will be held in the beginning of the next year, 2009. While Prince Mahesh Babu is busy making his next film Varudu, Powerstar Pawan Kalyan is getting ready with his next project, Puli. If Trivikram Srinivas is directing Varudu, SJ Suryah is the director of Puli. Interestingly, both the movies are going to feature glamour queen Parvati Melton as the heroine. The project cost of both the films is expected to be around Rs 30 crore each. Trade sources say that both Mahesh Babu and Pawan will be taking Rs 8 crore each as their remuneration. “Keeping this in view, Pawan’s Jalsa producer Allu Aravind recently announced that his film had made a business of over Rs 30 crore all over the world. This is nothing but a challenge to Mahesh Babu that he should surpass the record,” said a Tollywood trade analyst. Of course, NTR is too in the race, but he still has time to vie for the superstar status. As of now, the battle seems to be limited to Mahesh Babu and Pawan Kalyan. Mahesh is 34 and Pawan 35. Mahesh has the backing of his father Krishna’s Congress lineage; Pawan has the blessings of his brother Megastar Chiranjeevi and his political clout. An even battle indeed. |
