Problem with Mahesh movies is either wifee likes him or kids like him. so valla kosamanna velaaali. esp This movie may not be good. but definitely will not be bad as Panjaa or Sakthi. Can expect a moderate range movie like Oosarvilli or BVNM | ||

There is an inherent laziness to the way the movie was made - Brahmaji, Dharmavarupu are handled so badly. Their characters just disappear. Even the fights are so matter of fact. There is not one scene in the movie where there is nail biting tension - mafia movie lo tension lekapothe inkekkada undali. Pokiri for instance had some great tense sequences - but more than the fight scenes, the one that were more tense were the basketball court scene and the scene with Ashish Vidyarthi at night when Mahesh says he found a gun. This shows that you do not need fights to create tension. There is not one scene in Businessman that comes close to creating that edge of the seat excitement. | ||

I am not exactly a fan of Mahesh Babu but I feel he is the most charismatic star in the Telugu industry right now and leagues ahead of the rest like Pavan Kalyan or Ram Charan or NTR. (btw - my favourite hero at the moment is Naani, that’s for a different thread). I wanted to like this movie – Puri has made some good movies in the past and has created some unique characters we like, but has lost his way over the past few years. I was hoping he would recreate some magic moments. Unfortunately I can say no such thing – I felt very bored throughout the movie, was looking at my watch frequently and was reading some online reviews during one of the songs. The main problem with the movie is that it trivializes its subject matter, I have no problems with the philosophy that Puri espouses but the manner in which he portrays one man rising to the top in Mumbai and the whole of India seems to be a joke and it dis-respects me as an audience. It is like a school play directed by an idealistic trooper who has read a concise edition of Nietzsche’s works (or worse - read a few quotations). I would have bought into the subject matter if there was some dramatic intensity to the movie. I almost expected Puri to jump from behind the screen and shout April Fool. I am not expecting a Satya here but there is no tension in the movie. For a movie like this, creating that excitement is necessary. If not, treat the whole thing as a joke and have the usual bunch of comedians doing some comic stuff. The screenplay does not tilt one way or another - this is a mafia movie but it is not serious enough, it has some lightness but is not a comic movie too. This lack of emotional consistency kills the movie. The movie was shot in 3 months and looks like it. Very tacky production values. Poor editing (there is no indication that Kajal has been kidnapped until Mahesh asks Prakash Raj to hand her over at the end). Above all - terrible songs and BGM - they should ban this bugger Thaman from the music industry – apart from copying Pilla Chao, he is such a F*****disgrace that he has even copied Ennio Morricone’s BGM from A Fistful of Dollars. Until the TFI keeps supporting talentless hacks like him, we are doomed to make such crappy movies. The songs are shot very badly, the only half decent song – Sir Osthara - is shot lazily with no enthusiasm. The non-copied BGM is loud and noisy with no relevance to the scene. Thaman even makes Chakri look like Ilayaraja. And to think that he is composing the music for all the biggies this Sankranthi makes me hang my head in shame. Bhogi mantalu lo padesi thagalettali vadini. Kajal is non-descript; it is a sorry role for her and an even sorrier performance. The sole goddamn reason anyone should see this movie is because of Mahesh and his dialogues and his charisma which might enable the film to pull through at the box office. But I hope it does not pull through - such insults to the audience should be justly punished. |
