We should give the credit for going Nuclear to her, she has made some very good decisions for India and enhanced its stature and contributed to making it stable to an extent(yet she almost ruined it with her Emergency). I would say on the whole the positives outweigh the negatives. A better leader would have negotiated from position of power by demanding the occupied kashmir back because our forces had penetrated in to pakistan and we were in a great advantage. opportunities do not present themselves again and again in a war theater like that. worst handling of the issue. BW is a creation of Indira G. She created a whole generation of India hating Sikhs who are one of the most patriotic people around because of her actions. Having said that it takes guts to do what she did. Despite her hallowed status as a steely administrator and her resilience and grit in dealing with adverse(to her) situations we do need to remember she was the person who was responsible for imposing Emergency in our country to suppress the voice of people, Ofcourse we are not better off now with the current breed of politicians but she almost killed democracy in our country with her actions. Her handling of the external crises faced by the country are admirable and she was probably the only PM who went to war and yet did not lose territory in modern India but did not capitalize on the situation, we could have got back the occupied kashmir if she demanded it. Mrs Gandhi (that's how I remember my dad addressing her always) is a fearless leader. Her resolve and strength are very inspiring. It wasn't the easiest time to rule India, the issues we were facing, but she took them head on. She may not be faultless but you just can't help admiring her. | ||

IMO a leader has to be judged when not in power. Power gives confidence, and the position gives the ability to do many things. What matters is how the politician handles him/herself when not in power. Indira is the pioneer of dynasty politics in India, and committed the gravest mistake of destroying democracy in the country. IG is and will remain the best leader of India. To me, her best achievement is 1971 war. 93,000 pak soldiers as POW is a great achievement. That was a serious psychological blow to Pak. Also, tellalizt activities by Pak would have doubled had we not helped creation of Bangladesh and we had to worry about 2 borders instead of just one now. Indira Gandhi was a peerless politician and a fearless leader...we may not agree with her decisions or machinations but we cannot help admiring and respecting her steely resolve, her never say die resilience and ability to follow through on tough calls.. Her self confidence showed in her body language, the way she carried herself, presented herself ,was a sight to see..seen her a couple of times  And the string of weak-kneed spineless politicians we have seen since only makes us admire her more we lived in the MP quarters for a year ( leased out by MPs as they only spent 2-3 months in Delhi) and our MP himself a freedom fighter,used to say IG is sakti swaroopini - she commanded that kind of respect(or psycophancy depending on how you see it) in her troops aa chal ke tujhe main leke chalu ik aise gagan ke tale jahan gam bhi na ho, aansoo bhi na ho,bas pyaar hi pyaar pale | ||

i attended her political meet in 1977-78 after she lost power in vij. those days there was no security or any such thing.
