anta GA Jagan Happy With Power Tariff Hike Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has taken a calculated risk by announcing a steep hike in power tariff for domestic and other consumers with effect from April 1 next. It is for the first time that the power tariff is being raised after almost a decade; and the hike is so high that it is going to impose a burden of nearly Rs 5,000 crore on the people. The move is definitely counter productive for the Congress government, since the people are already bearing the brunt of massive power cuts ranging from two hours to six hours. One wonders why the Chief Minister has gone in for power tariff hike at a time when the Congress party is going to face by-elections to nearly 24 assembly seats within the next three months. Definitely, it is going to be good news for YSR Congress party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, who now has got yet another weapon to attack the ruling party and get mileage in the by-elections. He can now recall the statement of his father late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy that there would be no power tariff hike as long as he was in power. He can tell the people that YSR had given free power to farmers, without imposing any single paisa burden on the domestic consumers. âNow that YSR is not there, the government has chosen to impose heavy burden on the people,â he will tell.
