I am a little bit surprised and confused with whats going on with the Rupee. This kind of sudden depreciation is not ordinary. in my exp, the last time i have seen this happen is with SGD from 1.3x to 1.8x, and it took more than a decade to get back to a respectable 1.6x. Do not follow it now, so do not know where it is now. coming back to the Rupee, there are three possibilities: 1) They are softlanding the economy. All is not well in the India House, so they are prepping the economy and the players to rough weather ahead. they are prepping them to high inflation and high import input costs. not a bad idea. 2) There is an enormous reverse FDI (Dollar flight) from capital markets, so they are making cashing out the indian securities unattractive. they are preventing a stampede. not a bad idea. 3) The inward remittances have dried up. they have a huge BOP deficit. So, they desparately need inward remittances. So they are incenting it. A clue to this is their wooing of FDI into retail. Good effrot, but not the right method. people do not throw good money after bad money. instead of making rupee cheap, improving the quality of investment opportunities is a better way. 4) They lost control over rupee, as they have mishandled the basket in the wake of S&P downgrade of US Debt, and lost big hedge (10s of Billions) so cannot readjust. This is scary. In any case, India is a predominantly internal demand driven country. a perennial fighter and extremely lucky country. so long term no concern, but short it is causing jitters. Though dollar appreciating would definitely benefit exporters like Infy and other IT companies, most of these companies actively hedge their currencies and may not benefit to the same extent. I am sure everyone was caught on the wrong foot due to the sudden depreciation of INR. And fundamentally, as long as business is not doing well, betting on rupee deprec to bump up stock price is short termism. Infy is not in good shape - for instance, there was an article yesterday in Business Standard that they are making employees come on some Saturdays too to squeeze more of existing resources. You might want to punt on some commodity exporters (Hindalco, Sterlite) along with people exporters (like IT companies). Instead of individual stocks, bet on the market. In the medium term, the INR will appreciate. Even if it comes back to between 45-50, coupled with the stock market returns - you will end up getting around 20% p.a at least which is a fair return. | ||
