if you are new to the job, do not use SOH. Once in a indian get together. a couple of guys pestering me to sing: I said, "I cant sing for Nuts!" some old guys thought I called them Nut jobs! and got pissed off. lot of things like language, culture. another one: once I made a suggestion to a colleague on some tech stuff. she said,"go knock yourself out". SOH is not only important in Personal relation but in business too... For example, if you are in a meeting and you have heated arguments, if there is somebody in the team with good SOH, they can make some statements that eases out the situation. otherwise, life would be miserable. | ||

In general it helps, but can land you in awkward crap too. Last week true story. We had a sort of reunion. Our girl classmate from India was visiting US, so there was a reunion, I participated only via phone :-) The main item of entertainment was, putting me on the speaker phone and roasting me for (a) not attending (b) sending a gift basket instead. they really took off on me. all enjoyed quite a bit including me. then, one guy whom I came into contact first time after leaving the college (ejjatly 25 yrs) sort of going over his prasthanam. He said, after I came to the US, I simplified my name to "Srini". I said, "ahh.. you had a Vasectomy"! The guy not only did not the joke, he was embarassed and actually said, Yes! and the whole group went silent completely! I had to say, "hello, hello, you guys there!". Naa B.E friend okadu undevaadu.. not good looking and average at everything including studies. But his sense of humor was unparalleled, unheard of in our entire college. He scored a hottie just with his humor skills. Another friend - You just start a topic and he will take it to peaks. Highest IQ. But he got absolute zero SOH and was almost social outcast. Now he is a divorcee. So, how important is SOH to you and do you move along with folks with no SOH? Personally, i jsut dont like dudes with no soh and avoid them both in private and in social situations. In this db, there's always someone watching you!! |
