everyone wonders how india being so sloppy (management wise) still manages to get 8% GDP growth. Here is the secret. India's growth is fueled by her hapless suicidal farmers. this is how it works: consider a low income household of income R.2000 p.m. Any where in the world, that family will not be able to survive, because of the cost of rent and food. together they far exceed the $40 monthly income. So, most other countries subsidize him with food stamps using which the family buys food at market prices. cut to india. He does not get food stamps. he gets free food directly in the form of commodities. The Govt becomes the commodity supplier. And commoditi trader. To make "the trade" work, the Govt fixes the prices to the level that works for itself. That means, the Govt buys the food produce at a very low artificially managed price. The farmer is thus forced to sell his produce at a ridiculously low price pegged by the govt managed price fixing. He sells below cost. he ends up sacrificing all his labor free of cost, and ends up with a loss, his loans keep growing, he does not see a solution, and departs from the world. Another poor sacrificial goat takes his position and the cycle continues. Now this cheap grain and commodities go to the urban low income voters at 0-cost. Now that food is taken care, and the rent is taken care by the illegal land squatters, this poor family has all the $40 to spend on soaps, TV, cable, bottled water, etc. That's how you get 8% growth in India. Disclaimer: I hail from a generation of farmers who produce for below cost.
