when i was a kid, IAS officers were almost thought of as gods. AVS Reddy, Sarin, Santhanam, JP (Yes, Lok Satta JP) were household names. JP, in particular was like a role model, he being the Top 10 of IAS. When Santhanam came to visit our village, we showered him with flower petals. Sad to see what happened to Sri Lakshmi today. What happened to IAS today. After having AVS Reddy and Santhanam as Collectors, our district has also had some of the most corrupt Collectors. I never thought an IAS would be hauled to the jail. ever. This is the kind of stuff that happens either in US or in China. Not in medium-pace countries like India. Hope IAS cleanses itself. | ||

The controversial IAS officer Y Srilakshmi was on Monday arrested by the CBI in connection with the illegal mining case involving former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy’s Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC). An IAS officer of 1988 batch, Srilakshmi has earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first serving IAS officer to be arrested in a corruption case. She was named by the CBI as the co-accused in the illegal mining case. She was the secretary of the state Industries Department and had issued the controversial GOs granting mining license to OMC, allegedly in contravention of the rules. The other accused in the case—Gali Janardhan Reddy, his brother-in-law and Managing Director of OMC Srinivas Reddy and former Director of Mines V D Rajagopal have already been arrested. A highly influential officer in the YSR regime, Srilakshmi was believed to have lobbied hard in Delhi to escape arrest. However, the nemesis has caught up with her with the CBI taking her into custody. She has earned the dubious distinction of being the first serving IAS officer to be arrested in a corruption case. She appeared before the CBI twice in the recent past and was subjected to intense grilling. She was understood to have to the interrogators that she had merely implemented the “oral orders from the above.” She has reportedly placed the entire blame on the former Chief Minister late Y S Rajasekhar Reddy. According to media reports, she had cried before the CBI sleuths and pleaded with them not to arrest her in view of her ill-health. Her repeated attempts to meet the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to put across her case proved futile. | ||
