The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is gearing up to seize the ill-gotten assets of mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy and is believed have set up a team for this purpose. The CBI has so far gathered information about his assets in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, amassed by exporting iron ore through mining extending beyond the borders of Andhra Pradesh. According to CBIâsources, the former Karnataka minister has invested in fixed assets mostly in mango orchards in Kurnool, housing plots and houses in Nandyal. The probe agency has already gathered information about the purchasing spree during which Gali Janardhana Reddyâs wife Aruna flew by a helicopter to Nandyal for the propertyâs registration. âThe assets vary from fixed deposits to stocks in different firms. These assets will be attached with the help of courts,â sources said. Earlier, the CBI team used to travel from Hyderabad to Bellary. However, now a team will stay put in Bellary to speed up the investigation process. âCases pertaining to the accused are in both Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Therefore, we had a temporary office in Anantapur, which was closed after completion of the work in Anantapur,â CBI Joint Director Lakshminarayana said. The CBI has a long list of names that have helped Janardhana Reddy and his brothers to mine ore worth Rs 15,000 crore and export them through sea ports in Andhra Pradesh with the active participation of port, forest and mining officials. Meanwhile, 24 CBI sleuths investigating Reddyâs mining activity in Bellary have found several discrepancies, including illegal mining and violation of borders in the mines of Associated Mining and Deccan Mining Syndicate. |
