Sharon Bialek, accompanied by the celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred, became the first woman to publicly accuse the presidential candidate of sexual harassment, saying that she wants to âgive a voiceâ to other women who might have been harassed by Mr. Cain during his tenure at the association. âI want you, Mr. Cain, to come clean,â Ms. Bialek, who said she was a Republican, told a packed news conference in New York Cityâs Friar Club. âJust admit what you did. Admit you were inappropriate to people, and then move forward.â In a statement issued moments after the news conference started, Mr. Cain emphatically denied the accusation. âActivist celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred is bringing forth more false accusations against the character of Republican front-runner Herman Cain,â the statement said. âAll allegations of harassment against Mr. Cain are completely false. Mr. Cain has never harassed anyone. Fortunately the American people will not allow Mr. Cainâs bold â9-9-9 Planâ, clear foreign policy vision and plans for energy independence to be overshadowed by these bogus attacks.â Mr. Cain has been dealing with multiple allegations of sexual harassment since Politico first wrote of two legal settlements during his tenure at the restaurant association. Mr. Cain has acknowledged the settlements, but has said that the charges that led to them are âbaselessâ and false. In an interview after Ms. Bialekâs news conference, Joel P. Bennett, a lawyer for one of Mr. Cainâs anonymous accusers, said that Ms. Bialekâs claims were âvery similarâ in nature to the incident that occurred between his client and Mr. Cain. His client has not said whether Mr. Cain touched her physically. In a statement Friday on her behalf, Mr. Bennett alleged that Mr. Cain had engaged in a âseries of inappropriate behaviors and unwanted advancesâ toward his client. âIt corroborates the claim,â Mr. Bennett said of Ms. Bialekâs allegation. Asked whether that meant that Mr. Cain had physically touched his client inappropriately, Mr. Bennett said âI canât get more specificâ but added that âI can say it is corroborating.â Mr. Bennett also said that a woman named Sharon from Chicago left a message on his answering machine over the weekend saying that she, too, had been the subject of harassment at the hands of Mr. Cain. Mr. Bennett said he called her back to suggest that he could arrange for her to come forward confidentially, but that she said that she would think about it. After watching the news conference, Mr. Bennett said: âI guess she got over her shyness.â Ms. Bialek is the first woman to come forward publicly with such allegations. In her statement to the press, Ms. Bialek said that she had been fired at the association after about a year working for the groupâs educational foundation in its Chicago office. She said she sought Mr. Cainâs help to find other employment during a trip to Washington about a month after he left the group. During that trip, she said Mr. Cain had secretly upgraded her hotel room before drinks and dinner that the two had to discuss possible future employment. She said that after dinner, he put his hand on her leg and ran it under her skirt and pulled her head toward his crotch. âI was surprised and shocked and I said, what are you doing? You know I have a boyfriend,â Ms. Bialek recalled saying. âThis is not what I came here for.â âYou want a job, right?â she said Mr. Cain responded. âI asked him to stop and he did.â Ms. Allred said that Ms. Bialek approached her last week to come forward and tell her story. Ms. Allred showed what she said were two affidavits from friends of Ms. Bialekâs testifying that she had told them of the incident at the time. Ms. Allred did not release the affidavits to the press. âMr. Cain, while running for president, is actively lying to Americans,â Ms. Allred alleged. âEnough is enough. We have to fight back. That is what our client is doing here today.â The accusations by Ms. Bialek differ somewhat from those made anonymously by other women. All of the other cases were made by women who said the harassment happened while they were working at the restaurant association during Mr. Cainâs tenure as president. But her allegations add another voice to those describing a pattern of what they say was inappropriate behavior by Mr. Cain during that period. Other women have said he made unwanted advances during dinners or events that involved alcohol. Ms. Bialek said she first met Mr. Cain during her time at the associationâs Chicago office, when he sat next to her at a dinner during one of the groupâs conventions. He later invited her and her boyfriend to an after-party in his hotel suite, she said. But the alleged harassment did not occur until after she was fired, she said. Sue Hensley, a spokeswoman with the restaurant association confirmed that âSharon Bialek was employed by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation from 12/30/96 â 6/20/97.â Ms. Bialek said that her boyfriend at the time suggested that she reach out to Mr. Cain for help getting a job back at the association or employment elsewhere. She said she arranged to meet Mr. Cain at the bar in her hotel at the Capital Hilton in Washington D.C. When she arrived, she was surprised by the size of her hotel room, which had been upgraded to a suite. âHe asked how I liked my room,â Ms. Bialek said. She said that he âsmirkedâ and said, âI upgraded you.â The two later went to an Italian restaurant for dinner. As they drove back after dinner, she said, he âsuddenly reached over and he put his hand on my leg, under my skirt and reached for my genitals.â She said he also âgrabbed my headâ and pulled it toward his crotch. Ms. Allred read from what she said was an affidavit written by Ms. Bialekâs boyfriend at the time. âWhen Ms. Bialek returned from the trip from Washington, she told me that her room had been upgraded by Mr. Cain,â the boyfriend said, according to Ms. Allred. âShe also told me that he had engaged in sexually inappropriate conduct toward her while they were sitting in a car. She didnât volunteer the details and I did not ask. Ms Bialek and I stopped dating some 15 years ago.â |
