Entikaburlu: ""Platy, I studied in telugu medium till 10th. Of course, my English scores were very good in the 10th final. When I joined Inter in Vij, in English medium, I was initially terrified. Not by the teachers, but by the students. Teaching was fine, but I could not speak spontaneously with friends, who were mostly from St Johns of Gannavaram, perhaps the poshest school that time. But the english teachers were great. None other than Vegunta Mohan Prasad who recently passed away was my first english teacher. so, that created interest in the language. when i joined engg the trouble continued. the friends this time were from Little Flowers and Sainik School of Hyd, DPS, Mussorie, etc etc. Again same struggle. tell you a joke- once borrowed a novel from a friend. so in the mess during dinner time, he asked, hey are you done with the book or something like that. I said, "no, still studying it". I meant reading. everyone laughed. i was very embarassed. the friend, really a nice guy, he covered, "no he is really studying it, thats why he is taking long, otherwise he would have finished over the wknd". i took it as a challenge. read voraciously. did not help. listed to BBC regularly, till 2.00 AM. did not help. then I started writing. I started writing pages and pages of everything I felt, watched, liked, disliked, every day. that's it. Speaking is just an extension of writing. If you can write well, you will definitely speak well. It is not a necessary condition but a sufficient condition. By the time, I went to the grad school, I could think in english and speak in english. BTW, I know you from Sulekha days. howdy..""" Nice post. Brought some of the points so vividly. 1) Both reading and writing should go hand in hand. 2) Do not carry any inhibitions of not being a English medium guy. The best way to over come these inhibitions is by knowing the subject content well. In other words, if you relatively know the subject content well, you tend to speak and write. In no time, you will overcome all inhibitions, and open up to speak |

Platypus:
For me it is other way round. I often tend to speak too fast... My previous manager (half jap half american) used to say 'you need to slow it down...' Many times i feel that, i could've conveyed the message more effectively if i had taken a moment to think what i was going to say. Many of the good/great speakers that i have seen at work or outside have one quality that i am trying learn... 'speak slowly n clearly... pause for a moment at important stages so that audience will get a chance to grasp what you just said' As someone said, Platy is ragging us here I remember his suggestions with examples from TIDB/CCDB couple of years ago on the same topic. Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresea, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein |

This is a technique I applied with my team of freshers back in India and saw great improvement in verbal communication. I set an 2 hours aside each week these activities. Non-technical speeches : asked the guys to pick a generic topic - anything they were passionate about and give a 5 minute speech and q&a for 10 mins. Got 4 people to speak in each session. After people got over their inhibitions, moved to technical topics but still kept the non-work stuff once a month to keep the fun factor JAM (tailored)sessions : the way this works is one person is a timekeeper. First person starts speaking on a topic till the 1 minute ring goes off - the next person has to pick up the topic and continue talking for a min after which the third picks it up.... You are not allowed to pause in the minute you get ... This really helps people to think and talk quickly It's also a lot of fun the other day I ran into one of those team members after a decade and that was the thing he remembered most he said' those exercises you made us do have helped me so much'' .. So try it if you think you need to improve - get a group together and JAM JAM stands for' just a minute ' aa chal ke tujhe main leke chalu ik aise gagan ke tale jahan gam bhi na ho, aansoo bhi na ho,bas pyaar hi pyaar pale |

Prime Minister Nehru said in Lok Sabha "I will crush you (chapathi racists)". Syama Prasad Mookerjee replied "We will crush our own balls like chapathis". Lesson#1 - Attack the chapathi racist chaddi party first, not the chapathi non-racist topi party first. Lesson#2 - Even though a typical telugu speaks dravidian telugu language, he has got more of australoid(tribal) features and less of dravida features. Lesson#3 - but what baffles me most is...... dravidian-tongue Telugu maatlaade chaddis ki intha aryan/sanskrit/hindi kujli yendhi vaaa ani. Lesson#4 - Australoid tribals, kothi mooka, hanumans, monkey band telugu rama bakths should not get brainwashed in the middle. |

I do not tend to give such a logical explanation to the dreams. they are like abstract paintings brain puts out while it reorganizes the memory structures while the body in deep sleep does not need its services. my highly unscientific explanation of a dream is - they are like a screen saver that a computer plays when it is busily performing some thing like a disk defrag. |

Anand_n:would love your take on that
saw that.. nope, not big on dreams. no idea at all. but, lucid dreaming indicates a healthy mind and good sleep pattern. You get dreams in the REM sleep only. Vitamin B causes lucid dreams. at least in my case. I get a recurring dream all the time. which is - I need to write an exam in hour in a subject i never studied, attended, or knew I registered, or a subject I did not know existed. wake up quite stressed out and go back to sleep. Started getting this when I was in primary school, and got this just as recently as a few weeks ago. Any anxiety related to project at work, or an important exam for children, or even stock market causes this. |

Meeku english problem emiti ? It was your writing skill that lured me into the DB world. If you aree serious though, for you language skills or confidence should not be the problem. So coming to speaking, the key requisite is agility. You have to think on your feet and respond. The only solution is practice, practice, practice You learn to converse freely by conversing. Reading, listent to radio/tv are one way communication. They put words, phrases into the brain. But they do not help you practise speedy retrieval when needed Hang out with people in non-work environments to get the conversation flowing in a non-stressful environment. Make an effort at witty repartee till it becomes second nature For work, keep some standard lines ready as fallback responses. And try Toastmasters if you want to invest some serious time into it aa chal ke tujhe main leke chalu ik aise gagan ke tale jahan gam bhi na ho, aansoo bhi na ho,bas pyaar hi pyaar pale |

Cannot agree more...Is it even possible to write better than speak???.....I for one jst cannot pen my thoughts aswell as vocalize....for one thing when ur communicating with someone or a grp in person...ur body language helps the cause.....even on phone, u can pause, modulate ur voice or accentuate on specific words n hence communicate effectively.... |

Platy, I studied in telugu medium till 10th. BTW, I know you from Sulekha days. howdy.. |

Inko trick to Americanize your Engilipeesu. Think of how an American would pronounce a particular sentence/word before you say it. You will have a 5-10seconds pause before you say something, but it helps in the long run. You get used to it slowly and your accent becomes comfortable to listeners @work. |

Thoughts dont come to us in words, they dont follow the words, and thoughts dont coincide with the words, either.
