- make him accountable
- let him lead some team meetings
- start looking for a replacement right away. I would have looked for one on day 5 if he continued to show that attitude. dont know why you kept hanging on until now.
- if you want to be a good PM, the first thing you gotta ensure is that there's no body that's indispensable.

Use higher Authority management technique.......and put lot of pressure on him if he reply group mails like this...........if he didnot change......FIRE HIM.

most of these type of people are frustrated and are bitter with the members of team. they feel that they are denied of thier share hence turn more bitter. i will try this approach.

talk to him and find out what he wants to do in next 3-4 years. companies, -projects come and go, what we are left is our expertise and what we learn. He has reached saturation point in technical line but has to improve soft skills. tell him he will learn one day the soft skills, does he do it in 2011 or 2014 is his choice?

Does he tell you what he wants? It must be hard getting passed up for promotions..
Rather than constantly telling him what he isn't good at, try to recognize him for contributions, reward him with a small hike and see if that can break the wall he has built around him....

Btw, firing is not that easy, you need to document and prove that it wasn't based on any race/gender differences etc
Attitude will be hard thing to prove....just my thoughts

Will the project run without him? Or will it come to a halt till you find an alternate for him.

Team members ni bad ga project ga cheyyatam is dangerous for any project. If he is a FTE try to get him transferred to a different team.

Tried it in the first month itself... First 2-3 weeks lo ee candidate ichina shocks ki stopped inviting him to meetings with customer...

But internal team meetings lo i can't avoid him. And emails lo konni group ki vasthayi... avasaram ayinappudu reply ivvadu... other team members ni bad light lo choope chance vasthe he will reply to all promptly.

don't do that. if you know how to manage and extract work from him individually, just put him offline. ensure that he will not be part of any meetings or part of a group emails (DLs).

if there is a situation where he has to do 1-2-1 with a team member, make it a 3-way and you be part of it. if he is thopu and thurum, best thing is for you to keep him, but isolate him from the situations where he shows off

I am sure you might have seen this type cases in many projects... so wanted to understand the methods that you used successfully

Case 1. Current project lo oka head strong architect vunnadu. Too much ante too much attitude issues. Apparently he always had bad reputation in his previous projects as well... Technically good guy. Very good guy i should say. Extremely difficult to find good guys with such niche skill set. So being a major consulting firm they don't want to lose him as new projects keep coming in from one place or the other.

His previous managers have denied him promotions, comp hikes for last few years... but didn't change a bit.

Not a team player... Customer tho discussions lo he talks against his own team members... and sometimes against me to... Told him many times not to do that.

Anyway, this project was in a sxxitty state and was about to be scrapped... as a final measure they brought me on board to turn it around (which we did successfully)... we will be wrapping it up in next few months.. and there is scope for next phase as well.

I wanted to fire him as soon as i came on board but didn't want to make too many changes as project was already in bad state. Now that i was able to turn it around i have full support from management to take any kind of decision.

But as a last resort inka edaina try cheddaamaa ani think cheshtunna... technically good guy ani thinking... ( not very rich... if i fire him he has to go back to India as he will not be able to transfer his visa at this time... diff topic)
