i like your articles. keep up the good work. coming to first article, what is the implementation strategy ? The division of labor in olden days was not unique to India. They only thing different in India is it had a caste attached to it. Ee rojullo swa-dharma paatinche laa elaa enforce chestaaru ? Using force is out of the question i hope. what other methods can you think of ? I agree with most of your second article except control of technology by west. they are just getting there faster. they don't own it or go to great lengths trying to hide it. Capitalism means better innovation pure and simple. why do you want to bring a dead person into this ? especially when he is not alive - Jagan |

Sanatana Dharma Vs Global Capitalism In the last century two schools of economic and social organization dominated intellectual discourse, one is communism and its different versions and the other is capitalism with promise of freedom, free markets and free trade. By the end of 20th century communism was either dumped or became a lifeless political fossil. The end of first decade of 21st century saw capitalism and its fashionable incarnation globalization limping, this gave another opportunity to left-wing activism and terrorism to capture public imagination in some pockets of the world. Is communism only alternative to capitalism or vice versa? Can’t humanity think anything better than these ideas which are actually two sides of same coin? This is an attempt to compare economic and social ideals of Santana dharma to current frenzy of globalization. Social Foundations of Sanatana dharma Sanatana dharma stands on four legs of 1) Dharma 2) Artha 3) Kama and 4) Moksha. The dharma referred to is swa-dharma or dharma of individual. These are called purusharthas; the fulfillment of these four aspects of human aspirations in a balanced way is the goal and purpose of Sanatana dharma. Let’s see what this shloka in Gita says about Swa-dharma Shreyan swa-dharmo vigunaha par-dharmat swanusthitat, Swadharme nidhanam shreyaha par-dharmo bhayavahaha. Meaning:"To do one's Dharma (duty) is good, even if it is a small and insignificant compared to other’s dharma. Death in the course of one's duty (Dharma) is beneficial. It is dangerous to attempt other’s Dharma without qualification". What is swa-dharma in current capitalistic context? There is none in the true sense, since nobody has sense of ownership in any profession; at best they work as an employee for a salary. In a capitalistic society money and desire (artha & kama) replace dharma as first principle. However for the purpose of this article we consider only qualified professional work aspect of swa-dharma leaving family duties. The most important thing in man’s life is his work; it gives him a sense of purpose and ownership in life. Any stable social system should focus on giving that purpose of work to its subjects, otherwise they are forced to interfere in para-dharma (other’s dharma) without qualification or become disoriented idlers. The above shloka says para-dharma is dangerous and it’s beneficial to die following swa-dharma. Swa-dharma is a medium of penance that gives fulfillment and purpose to life. Capitalism doesn’t give scope to this penance of swa-dharma and routinely displaces individuals, families, communities and nations. How Sanatana dharma did ensured scope for practicing the swa-dharma, another shloka in gita explains chatur varna maya srishtam guna karma vibhagasha Meaning: I have created four varnas based on their nature and work The above shloka may ring alarm bells for some and they may smell caste discrimination. Varna is not related to caste discrimination, infact not following the swa-dharma of varnas resulted in caste discrimination and conflicts, will explain this. There are four varnas 1)Brahmana 2)Kshatriya 3)Vaishya 4)Shudra. Does the capitalistic system have any aspect of varnas in the true sense? I would say no, it has some aspects of vaishya and shudra varna devoid of moral principles associated with them. Swa-Dharma of Brahmana – He should have dedication to preserve and practice ritual, spiritual and dharmic knowledge. Brahmana is supposed to maintain high standards of penance with internal and external purity, live on alms and patronage of other varnas without demanding anything. It’s amazing the way they preserved the vast indic literature, many of them by memorizing. Swa-Dharma of Kshatriya -- He is trained in the protection of dharma, should be ready to sacrifice his life if required in the fight for dharma. He is also responsible for administering the code of dharma. Swa-Dharma of Vaishya – maintains material productivity and prosperity in society following moral code of dharma and contributes monetarily to dharmic activities for common good. Swa-Dharma of Shudras – Service and manufacturing, activities range from technical, engineering, artistic work to manual labour. The status, respect and privileges of all four varnas are proportional to their penance and sacrifice. Caste conflict is the result of varnas claiming their status and privileges without following the prescribed duties of their swa-dharma. The degradation and defeat of hindu civilization is the consequence of failure of top three varnas in their swa-dharma. Is varna hereditary? The above shloka clearly says it is based on guna(nature) and karma(work), it doesn’t say by birth. Traditionally, the horoscope of a person also refers to his varna(nature) based on his birth star, a shudra parents born can astrologically have kshatriya or brahmana varna, this is another proof to say varna is not acquired from parents but an aspect of person’s dominating nature. However, offspring born in a particular varna have natural opportunity to nurture the qualities because of the ecosystem or karma they live in, same is true with many occupations even today, everywhere we find offspring following the footsteps of their parents. In a world devoid of modern transportation, communication and omnipotent centralized governments this was the model that ensured current fashionable phrase “minimum government and maximum governance” and individual purusharthas of Dharma,Artha,Kama and Moksha. Dance of destruction by Global capitalism The current global capitalistic system has no concept of swa-dharma; it’s driven purely by greed and desire. The institutions it has developed drive even people with best intentions to adharma. In this western influenced global economic and social architecture, all sections of population work to facilitate gambling by few capitalists at the top and they manipulate entire civilization. So called government heads are dependent on capitalists to survive, this reverses the natural power structure that has political authority as final. A soldier who risks his life is not allowed to have a say in the affairs of the country and a bunch of nincompoops rule. This is not to say military dictatorship or leadership is preferable. Prospective rulers should have some record of heroic service to the nation. This will help them to understand pain, risks and challenges. It’s alleged that our first prime minister has only contempt for military uniform; the consequence is endless suffering to nation and continuous bleeding of armed forces. Farming that sustains humanity is looked down and farmer considered unskilled labourer, they are exploited across the globe The stock market gambling at the top continuously agitates individuals, companies and societies; they remain in a state of perpetual turmoil. All perceptible elements of nature (air, water, earth) are exploited and polluted. All subjects of society are in either direct or indirect fight with all others out of mindless competition and artificial scarcities. Western imperialism and superficial ideas have pulled the globe into this state of self – destruction. Is there no alternative possible to the current economic and social systems? Can we stabilize the system following the spirit of sanatana dharma? Even if we manage to change the system will rest of the world allow us to sustain it? What is the road map of Hindu organisations in these matters? It would be outright foolishness if anybody attempts to exactly imitate lifestyle of bygone era. However, we could evolve decentralized grass root social and economic institutions that let individuals grow to their capacity fulfilling their aspirations without undermining dharma, but for that world needs an inspiring leadership, a leadership that can make this epoch transition feasible. Will the course of events in future bring forth such leadership that can do course correction, or the situation will turn so bad that lord himself have to come down and interfere as promised in Gita, or humanity has no redemption from these varieties of pollution and tendencies of mutual destruction until they finally become extinct?. |

Global Capitalism: West Vs Rest This is second part on Global Capitalism. In the first part “Sanatana Dharma Vs Global Capitalism” a comparitve analysis between the two was attempted and following the ideals of sanatana dharma the need for decentralization of economic, social and political power was emphasized. This part discusses the machinations of global capitalism driven by west and how it managed to maintain its control over the world after an era of naked imperialism that ended with Second World War. How west rules the rest? In the 20th century naked imperialistic spirit of west transformed into two seemingly opposite but essentially similar sugar coated ideals of Global capitalism and Global Communism. After two devastating mostly western centric so called world wars, battered nations and economies of west were no longer in a position to maintain their hold on colonies or continue with their open imperialistic aggression. They reinvented their imperialistic spirit from direct physical aggression to sublime mental realm of ideas and concepts with necessary supportive institutional mechanisms. The imperialistic “white man’s burden” transformed to world civilizing mission with ideals of world peace, democracy, justice and human rights on one side and the utopian world of proletariat on the other side. The west created institutional framework to control the rest essentially at three interdependent levels 1) Political 2) economic control 3) Knowledge & Technology Political Control by west After Second World War United Nations succeeded League of Nations as a platform to bring nations to the table and discuss issues of international importance with ramifications on world peace. Its main objective is supposedly to maintain world peace and it has all the lofty ideals that human mind can think of in its charter. However, in reality it should be called united west, four out of five so called permanent members with real power (U.S, France, Britain, and Russia) are geographically and culturally linked to west. The only country form east, china, lost its traditional moorings and taken over by the same imperialistic spirit in the form of communist dictatorship. Together these five countries took over the task of civilizing the rest of the world. In the last seventy years of its existence United Nations has become a conduit for west to interfere in the affairs of the rest, often resulting in combined western military attacks on dissident nations. The strategy was simple, divide even the same ethnic nations in the name of capitalism and communism, take one side or other and interfere in political, economic and military affairs of the region, all in the name of world peace Western Economic Control The west with its vast imperialistic experience knew rest of the world wouldn’t give a damn about its political authority or civilizing mission if not backed by economic control. Western capitalism realized that a common economic framework supported by a western controlled dominating global currency is required to continue their naked imperialistic loot of the past in the changed world scenario after Second World War. They have to repackage their greed and sell it with benevolent sounding phrases like “economic upliftment of poor” or glamour sounding words like “Globalization”. The west realized the resource hungry nature of modern civilization it has fashioned and overwhelming critical dependence on energy resources to function at every level, the capture and control of energy resources would essentially mean that they can dictate terms to nations and make their economies run on their terms. However, a large part of energy reserves are buried in the deserts of Middle East. To the advantage of west, desert cannot economically sustain itself without international trade even for basic essential items like food. Moreover, the region has religious flash points and many countries are controlled by aristocratic royal families. Overlooking self-ordained world civilizing mission with ideals of freedom, democracy and human rights, west supported the medieval governing structures and established a mutually beneficial engagement with oppressive royal families and even propped up few dictators in the region to control crucial energy resources. Any dissenting voice in the region was suppressed ironically with the pretext of world civilizing ideals of democracy, human rights or lately weapons of mass destruction. Iraq and Libya are recent examples of blatant double standards and hypocrisy of west to control crucial energy resources. Control of all important world energy resources and their trade in western currencies combined with arms sale to strife ridden regions of the world, in many cases strife caused by its own scheming, west could establish its currencies, particularly dollar, as reserve currencies for the rest of the world. Nations became hungry for dollar to buy energy and arms to survive. Taking advantage of this hunger for western currencies west created an international banking network with institutions like IMF and World Bank to further entangle rest of the world with loans and make economies dependent on its global economic and social architecture in the name of globalization. The present so called globalized economy leverages west to feast on the rest and pass on its extravaganzas and costly adventures of war to the rest of the world and also gives an option to impose economic sanctions on dissenting nations. Knowledge & Technology Control What gave west direct or indirect control over rest of the world? One can cite many reasons ranging from imperial advantage in history, control over world institutions and resources, superior military strategy and organization. However, one underlying factor within all these reasons is its superior edge in technology over rest of the world. One can trace this accelerated technological innovation to capitalistic restlessness and its penchant to control with huge centralized institutions. However, the technological foundations were laid down by some genuine researchers and philosophers who attempted to understand and model the secrets of nature, most prominent of them were Galileo, Newton and others, who created theoretical framework for advancement of technology. Some argue that west received knowledge of calculus, essential for development of physical theories from kerala school of mathematics via Jesuits, but, we cannot deny western foundations of modern science and technology. However, in the first half of 20th century western exploration of fundamentals of nature reached dead-end. Physics is dabbling with theories that can neither be demonstrated nor lead to revolutionary technological breakthroughs. Technological innovation still continues essentially with core ideas of 19th and early 20th century. Given an option west wouldn’t have shared technological expertise with rest of the world, but that would have blocked or hindered the pace of its loot and capitalists would have lost potential markets, so some aspects of technological innovation and the products associated with them reached the shores of colonies during imperialistic past. After Second World War rest of the world invested in technology and eventually some parts of the world are catching up with west in spite of its strict controls on crucial strategic technologies. Countries like China, India who can potentially challenge west are slowly but steadily achieving technological parity with west. Can West sustain its rule over rest any longer? The technological dominance that sustained the control of west also sowed seeds for the decline. In future innovation in renewal energies and clean technologies has potential to dismantle oil centric current global economic structures. Self sufficiency in energy could lead to largely self sufficient independent economies in countries like India, china and other countries of decent size with adequate resources. Also, with wide spread technological interconnectivity people are seeing through the methods of western domination and discrimination. There are enough signs that west cannot sustain its hold, a multi polar world could emerge with strong local flavors in near future. West on its part would like to further penetrate deep into emerging economies with control over critical areas like finance, agriculture and retail trade. Losing control over world economy could potentially unleash catastrophic effects in western societies; some of them are already visible with anger rising against state and capitalistic symbols. Global Capitalistic lobbies will make all out efforts to resist change in world affairs even to the extent of using brute force. However, Afghanistan experience has shown them military adventures cannot control and dictate world any longer, unless they are out to destroy themselves and planet with weapons of mass destruction. |
