Regarding Amitabh during that time: I honestly do not remember at all, that he made any statement. Not much of a chance. Because, just before that, he got injured gravely, and had myesthania gravis, a rare disorder, and was hospitalized in Breach Candy hospital. All of India prayed for Amitabh's recovery. Even IITD students had an informal prayer etc. But he was very close personally to Rajiv at that time. So, there could have been some sympathetic statements misunderstood. Rajiv himslef was criticized that he did not do enough to prevent the unrest. But that was also unfair. He was with Mrs G all day and night at Theen Murthy House, almost in a trance, besides, he had no official position, so actually it was not his job to do anything. The whole DDA was in a mess, and I do not want to say the names, but those who were supposed to protect actually led the mobs. | ||

I lived it. I was in IITD Karakoram House. We got on top of the terrace and watched helplessly Delhi burn for days! CP is gutted. People were killing sikhs on the Palam road. IIT students barricaded the road, isolated all sikhs in taxis and scooters, and diverted them into the campus and sheltered them fed them. The Sikhs are so courageous and proud, most fasted in outrage rather than accepting food. By the second day, word got around that IIT had Sikhs shltered, so someone tried to poison our water supplies. We had to go without water for a day. Every tap is sampled and certified. The most horrifying things was - Hindustan Times ran pages and pages of a list of people missing, for weeks. Several thousands were killed and thrown into the Yamuna river. On the day Mrs G was murdered, we had an exam. Because of the exam, our prof didnot disturb us. As each was leaving the exam hall, she was whispering something. She is such a sweet lady, she talks so softly even during the class, so I did not think anything. When I handed in my sheets, she coolly whispered, "Indiraji was assassinated, the Institute is closed for the day, the Director requests all students stay indoors, and pay attention to the Notice Boards". I was so shocked. Then a classmate, a girl, looks at me and says, "She just celebrated her birth day last week!". I thought that's a very sweet tribute to the fallen lady. A truly horrifying memory for me. | ||
