There are N number of ways as work around.... as Telugudesam mentioned every state has its own laws, karnatakalo konatam konchem kastam compared to AP for NRI's...

kindha oka margam chepa inko margam emiti ante your parents can buy land and gift it to your kids... mee kids minority teere daka you will be legal protectors for that property.... only catch is your parents has to have income to buy that land they can not use money sent by you to buy this particular property

Yes. NRIs and PIOs should not buy Agri land in India. As Bunty said, buy it on parents name.

The other option couples with agri background do is for one partner to become US citizen and the spouse to retain GC and all the agri land in their name.

even you buy you should show the proof that you bought it with money which you earned while you are in india..
