Pkfans:

come to think of it, the whole web (99%) at least runs on some clone of Unix (Linux etc). Almost all browsers are written in C. All databases are written in C. All bootstrap code is written in C. All operating systems are written in C. Even java uses C for its bytecode engine (I think, but could be wrong).

I think under-rated news. I think he is base for the most of the technologies what he have now.

very few people realize how many trillions of dollars the C-Language has churned.

Before C, every processor had to have its own custom Assembly language. You cannot easily take a program that runs one processor to another processor.

he spec'ed the language, created it, wrote the compiler, and wrote the OS. the true father of portability.

you thought?? what can I say. AFAIK, Kerninghan is still around. Rob Pike, the other guy in the group is a Google Fellow now, and created/creating the Go Language.

The co-author of the C Prog Language book Kerninghan & Ritchie died. RIP. He is also the main developer of Unix at the Bell Labs. A pioneer of writing style.

"Getting Started" as the first chapter, they started.
"Hello, World" the first program in almost every language now.

The C language itself is a benchmark for efficiency, terseness, compactness and style. He was also a Turing Award winner (Nobel prize for Computers)

RIP.
