The fear of being arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths for their alleged links with the illegal mining scam, has virtually prevented a couple of BJP minelord turned politicians from appearing in public in the district for the last few weeks. Last week, the CBI had raided the premises of more than a dozen associates of arrested mining czar Gali Janardhan Reddy, fuelling speculation that the sleuths had secured vital information on the mining illegalities of Kudligi BJP MLA B. Nagendra, Kampli MLA and former minister B. Sreeramulu’s nephew T.H. Suresh and Hospet BJP MLA B.S. Anand Singh.

Rumours have been doing the rounds that the CBI sleuths are ready with a target list and may swoop down on these legislators any time and take them into custody. Many of Reddy’s frontmen and officials whose names figure in the mining scam, are worried because of unconfirmed reports that the CBI may arrest them soon, said sources. Except for Hospet MLA Anand Singh, no prominent politician or minelord turned BJP legislator has been seen in public in Bellary or in their respective constituencies in the past few days. Mr Singh was seen attending a Brahmin community function in his constituency on Saturday.

The fear of being arrested had prompted Bellary legislators to meet Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda on October 8 and ask him to transfer Bellary deputy commissioner Adithya Amlan Biswas and superintendent of police Dr Chandragupta out of the district. A delegation comprising Bellary Lok Sabha MP J Shanta, Raichur MP Sanna Fakirappa, and MLAs Nemiraju Naik, Chandra Naik, B Nagendra and H T Suresh Babu, who called on chief minister Gowda reportedly told him that the DC and the SP were responsible for the arrest of Reddy as they did not alert them about the CBI sleuths' arrival in the district.

Though, the CM reportedly took shelter in the letter from the Supreme Court monitored Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to the government that has barred the transfer of the DC and SP till the committee's probe into illegal mining is completed, the Bellary BJP legislators are not convinced and are still fuming, said sources.
