NEW DELHI: Congress said it was not possible to give a timeframe on resolution of the Telangana stand-off, urging statehood activists to call off the strike which has brought the region to a halt in the festival season.

Statements to this effect from senior leader Pranab Mukherjee and general secretary incharge Ghulam Nabi Azad hammered home the point that Telangana issue was not near culmination despite the revived agitation in the last few weeks.

Mukherjee told a news channel that Telangana was a complex issue because of which it had lingered for six decades, starting from the first states reorganization commission. He said the sensitive issue could not be given a timeframe for resolution.

Importantly, he appeared to discourage any excitement over the fresh burst of agitation, suggesting the country had to be ready for such issues from other regions too. "In the larger context, many more problems in future will come because there was no pattern in the formation of states (after independence)," he said.

The Congress troubleshooter's remarks in the thick of statehood agitation appeared aimed at dampening the excitement after TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao's token fast at Rajghat and his meeting with the prime minister in Delhi. It has been said that shifting of agitation to the Capital had piled fresh pressure on the Centre to accept division of Andhra Pradesh.
