so you are playing threw wi fi,how is quality?

No. for example, I open the browser in iPad and give the URL for receiver (like 192.168.1.110). It opens, the receiver controls. I choose network play, select media server as source. Navigate the albums and play. iPad (wifi) is working as remote control only. Receiver is playing media from server via wired connection.

@Truelies,
I chose to wire whole house with cat5 during construction (new house). Every room has cat5 running to basement. I installed ethernet wallplates in the rooms and terminated other ends with cat5 sockets. Added a switch to connect them all.

Now, one of the wired outputs from primary router in office room is connected to wall port. Every ethernet port in other rooms gets internet connection. That's easy part.

Then, bought few routers (1 linksys, 2 netgear) off eBay, installed dd-wrt firmware and configured them as access points. I am feeding these routers with local ethernet port and serving wired clients. This makes all my clients wired. Very reliable connection, even for HD streaming. I turned off DHCP in secondary routers, so my primary router gives IP to all clients.

Further, I enabled wireless on each router giving same SSID (different channel#). So, when I walk from one floor to other, one side to other, my device picks up the closest router. This is called wifi-roaming. This makes every corner of the house clouded with wifi signal.

Also, enabled guest network on family room router. If any of my friends need wifi, I let them connect to guest network (passwd protected). They can not see any of my personal devices, as peers.

good one. couple of questions.

-did you pull the ethernet cable from office room to basement to connect router & switch?

- what are those linksys and netgear devices in bedroom & family room? have you pulled ethernet to connect them from switch?

@Emc2,
Read the FAQ at the link. It appears as they are including router as part of their "home network". There is definitely a 4 device limit for Cox users.

@Emc2

Sorry if you got offended.

Link open kavatledu. Does Cox modem has built-in wireless router? If so, it is possible that Cox could put restriction on devices. But, if you have your own router, you should not have this limit.

ISP gives only on IP which happens to be your wireless router. You can connect any number of devices to your router (256 max. unless you change subnet).

i agree, i dont think ISP can restrict that

never heard so..

any ISP will just provide one cable modem (meaning one IP address)..when you hookup wifi router to your modem, then it allows multiple devices within home wifi network.

for external, its just one IP address, but internally (within home network) there will be multiple ID address, one each to each device.

log on your router through your browser it will show you how many connections it will allow.

Is the IP conflict within your subnet? That means, your router's DHCP is disabled or you manually assigned same ip to more than one device. That's your mistake not router/ISP. Don't tell me that you have more than 256 devices in the network...
