The Tatas and Godrejs have been known for their philanthropy, and even the likes of Azim Premji and Anand Mahindra have donated generously. Now it is the turn of GM Rao, chairman of the GMR Group. Rao has pledged $340 million (Approx Rs. 152.89 crore) worth of his shares in the company towards education of underprivileged children. Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao, an entrepreneur from Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, is a jute trader who started off three decades ago. He has donated the money to Varalakshmi Foundation, a charitable organisation started by his company. The organization, which has branches abroad, focuses on education of underprivileged kids. "I have always believed that we have a responsibility to give back to the society in which we thrive and we owe our success to," the 60-year-old businessman told said the Times of India. This gesture by an Indian businessman comes at a time when Warren Buffet, chairman of Berkshire Hathaway has arrived in the country to encourage philanthrophy among the rich here. | ||
