CHINTALA (PRAKASAM): In what could be an all-out war against his political rivals, most of whom belong to Jagan camp, M Maheedhar Reddy, municipal administration minister from Prakasam district, is "dishing out dirt" to silence them, including Jagan MLA and former minister Balineni Srinivasa Reddy. Maheedhar spent a lot many days in Ongole recently under the guise of conducting official review meetings even as he was concentrating on the activities of Balineni. Finally, the minister could lay his hands on key files which revealed that Balineni, former ZP chairperson Katam Arunamma and several YSR Congress leaders had purchased land in and around Chintala village in Kothapatnam mandal in the past few years. He was told by senior officials that these leaders had invested huge sums on the lands in the area with a hope to making a quick buck following reports about setting up an airport, port and other industries in Vanpic SEZ, which is close to the mandal. Local Congress leaders, who are still maintaining links with Balineni, had also invested in the area after the promoters of Vanpic started laying the fencing for the lands acquired by them. If sources are to be believed, Balineni purchased 500 acres and Arunamma 100 acres in different pockets in and around Chintala, located 8 km from Ongole. After a careful study, the municipal administration minister directed the district collector to allocate 30 acres of government land in Chintala to set up an ultra-modern dumping yard to dispose of the garbage collected from Ongole. The catch is that the land identified for the dumping yard is located in the midst of the lands owned by YSR Congress leaders, including Balineni. Within days of the announcement of the dumping yard, the land rates started falling. Promoters of real estate firms, which laid ventures in the nearby lands by giving huge advances to the farmers, were left clueless. Most of the land tracts in the surroundings of Chintala are uncultivable. They were sold at Rs 50,000 per acre before the announcement of Vanpic project. The rates went through roof (Rs 3 crore per acre) after the Vanpic corridor project was announced. But pouring water on their dreams to rake in the moolah, the minister said the government would go ahead with the dumping yard project in Chintala. In a move to derail the minister's plan, the YSR Congress leaders brought locals into the picture and forced them to stage dharnas and rallies against setting up the dump yard in their village.
