My response:

Interesting. A couple of months ago I was in the US and was thoroughly relishing driving through the organized traffic when my friend quietly remarked - "Driving in the US is such a tense job - I feel relaxed when I am driving in India."

I almost knocked a man down and screeched to a complete halt in the middle of the road. "You are kidding. Right?" I asked him.

His reasoning:

1. You have to be mindful of the million rules while driving in the US. Stop sign, residential area, school bus, free right, left on yield, merging philosophy... and you have this constant fear at the back of your mind that a cop might catch you anytime.

2. In India, there is no such thing as the cop catching you for traffic indiscipline. I don't have to worry about rules. The only thing I worry about is my car and the scooter/cyclewala striving hard to create a dent or two on it.

When I compare the effort involved in both these cases, I find the first point to be mentally draining and the second point - positively rejuvenating.

I told him that I felt exactly the other way. He nodded. He had an explanation for that too.

Whoever learnt driving in India would side with him and whoever learnt driving in the US would side with me.

For now, I side with you Hussain saab. Twin cities can kill us with the traffic - without even touching the car once.
