What a fall it has been for Gali Janardhana Reddy. On Tuesday, while his battery of lawyers were working overtime to arguing to secure him bail, the jailed mining baron was standing in queue in the Chanchalguda central prison waiting for his turn to get his lunch and dinner; and here was a man who refused to turn up in a lower court in spite of non-bailable warrant being issued against him; here was a man who, allegedly, slept on a gold-plated bed and used imported mattresses. Indeed, it has been a humiliating fall. The arrested Janardhana Reddy and BV Srinivas Reddy are among about 700 inmates in the prison, which normally houses offenders including pick-pockets and wife-beaters. But the Reddys are not the only high-profile inmates in the jail. B Ramalinga Raju, the accused in the Satyam scam, his brother B Rama Raju and six other executives of the IT company, too, are lodged in the same prison. However, the senior Raju has been allotted a separate room with a facility to get a better diet following the court directions. The mining don, for now, is getting the regular inmate food in the jail. The jail authorities provide about 600 gm of rice, 100 gms of dal and 250 gm of vegetables. The Reddys were provided khicchdi for the breakfast on Tuesday. The Reddys had to spend the Monday night along with three more inmates in the admission block of the jail since the authorities are yet to provide him a cell. According to sources, the mining baron had to sleep on the floor with a piece of cloth covering him. According to the jail rules, he has to clean his plate and the glass himself. "The accused can seek priority treatment when they file the counter appeal in the court. That’s how Ramalinga Raju was provided a separate cell and allowed to get his own food on health grounds," a source explained. | ||

Y S Jaganmohan Reddy's indirect offer of olive branch to the Congress party, indicating that he might support the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance at the Centre is being taken with a pinch of salt. The Congress leaders in the state are wondering whether it was an indication that Jagan has developed cold feet in the wake of the Central Bureau of Investigation's probe into his illegal assets case. "By making a categorical statement time and again that he would not be joining hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party at any cost, Jagan has been left with limited options. The chances of a third front coming to power at the Centre are almost nil and the only option left is the UPA. He cannot join the UPA without being invited by the Congress. So, he is trying to get closer to the Congress, if not returning to its fold," an analyst observed. However, the Congress leaders are not ready to accept Jagan's support to the UPA. "Right now, Jagan is the only MP and the UPA does not need his support at all. That his party would get more MPs in the next elections is too far-fetched speculation, because 2014 elections are still three years away. Anything may happen by that time," a Congress leader said. |
