Andhra Pradesh bags the major chunk of seats in the prestigious IITs, but it also holds the dubious distinction of students getting poor Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in semester exams in IITs. As per official records, less than 20 per cent of AP students out of about 2,500 clear semester exams in the first two years at IITs. This is apparently leading to depression and suicide among students at IITs. âThe first two semesters are the best time to score better CGPA. It would be extremely difficult to improve CGPA in the last two years if one has had poor grades in the first two years. The stress to maintain the reputation of being an IITian has often been leading to suicides,â said Prof Krishna Kumar, an IIT trainer. A majority of AP students studying at IITs in Delhi, Chennai, Khara-gpur, Mumbai and Kanp-ur are said to be lagging behind other students. âDuring my 20-year stint at IIT-Kharagpur, I was surprised to see the number of students from AP getting enrolled. Shockingly, 30 per cent of them fail to clear the semester exams in the first two years. Their backlogs are piling up and they are forced to extend the course to clear the backlogs. With this, they are lagging behind in campus recruitments and this was leading to depression,â a senior IIT professor said. |
