Individuals named in criminal chargesheets could be barred from contesting elections under a radical new legislation being prepared by the government, which is keen to show it is serious about tackling criminalisation of politics.

The union cabinet will in the next few weeks consider a legislation - the decriminalisation of politics bill - that will seek to ban individuals formally charged by the police from electoral participation until they are acquitted, Law Minister Salman Khurshid told ET. "We will shortly take a bill banning chargesheeted individuals from standing for elections."
