yes, i have noticed this. one way to play indian market here is to buy the INP symbol. It is in bargain dump now. but why is India down now - there are no macro issues. Except Sonia Madam health. Which of course is a big thing. Otherwise they should be coasting along pretty nice. So, I think the Indian drop is only temporary and hence a good opportunity. Take a good look at INP. | ||

Advising people about money is tricky business. if i lose my money that is one thing, but make someone else lose money is 2X painful. So, hesitate to do this. But I know what you are asking, since I too pester friends for advice. So, I will give you a few tips on what I would do in your situation. Do your own research and let me know what you think. ------ How -------------- Make 10 parts of your money. Keep 3 parts in a CD. This is your safety money. Do not ever break this CD. When you are in a foreign country, remember this: Your papers must be in order. You must obey all laws and pay all bills, and taxes, and have money in Cash. This is absolute must. Remaining seven parts, invest only when you see a bargain. take your time, dont be pushed. learn to use Limit Ordering. Keep a Limit Order and wait patiently. ------------------ What ------------- - buy Gold and Silver - either physical or ETF. If buying too much (>100K) start buying in physical - buy stocks you think will be there in 10 years. For eg. somebody recommends a Clothing Company. Will people wear their stuff in 10 years, may be, may not be. so avoid. On the other hand, consider Amazon or Apple, will they be there and as exciting? I personally think. so I invest. So, pick a symbol and critique them in your own silly way. a good stock passes every silly test. bad stocks dont. my personal bets in this category : Apple, Amazon, BIDU (chinese search), ABX, Ford, GE, Master Card or Visa - next bets are young innovative game changing technology companies. these companies introduce incremental changes to the way we do things now, and one day they will make it the only way things are done. eg. investing in NetFlix 3 years ago. my bets in this category are- ISRG, MAKO, VMW, etc - third bets (only a small portion) - here you will make foolish throwaway bets. You invest and write off. Companies with their eyes in the skies, crazy ideas, Gold explorers, unapproved pharma makers, unapproved device makers, etc fit into this: my best bets here: ARAY, ATEC, EDAP, IMDS, BRD, Sandstorm, RNN etc. Hope you have enough tips to start doing the homework.. thanks for asking, this helps me to crystallize my own thinking and become more disciplined. Investing is not about smartness or luck. it is basically discipline. selecting a plan and executing it with discipline, not succumbing to fear or greed at the wrong time. | ||

thammi- unfortunately i do not follow indian market at all, so cannot offer an educated opinion on RIL. This is what you need to do, finding the correlation factor of Sensex and RIL, HDFC, SBI. It is absolutely guaranteed that Sensex comes back to it normal levels in 6-8 months. Whichever correlates more, comes back fast. | ||

In real estate, good stuff costs money. So, stay in that "craze" zone. GVM is still 4000-7000 range. peanuts compared to hyd or even vij proper rates. it should be easily 15K-25K in less than 10 years. just wait till Vij NRIs start buying where they hail from. | ||

thammi, I do not follow the indian market except for a couple of stocks namely HDFC and Titan. 3000 Rs invested in 1986 in HDFC is worth about 50 lakhs now. Similarly Titan. So, among the Indian Banks, I highly recommend HDFC. ADR is HDB. Having said that, SBI is also good. Actually cheaper. HDFC is quite beaten now, at this level it is a good buy. Any Indian blue chip is a strong buy now. There is nothing structurally wrong with the Indian economy right now, but the Indian stock market is getting jitters from the US and Euro. These two markets affect Software exporters only, but not domestic banks. Sonia's health is a string concern, but I am hoping she is fine. So, if SBI is looking good to you, go for it. I have a strong feeling, at one point, Buffett will take a good look at HDFC or SBI. Both are low risk proxies for Indian growth. I am actually surprised why he has not done yet, may be because of the foreign holding restriction in indian banks. If I am doing, I will go for HDFC Bank. Even though higher P/E, better valuation, smaller Market cap, potential to merge with parent HDFC, and a definte potential for Buffett takeover. | ||
