that was my first USA trip. idi Oct lo ayyindi. chala pedda disaster. inkoka hour later ayithe chala mandi poye varu. Stevens highway collapsed top tier on middle tier. bay bridge lost a berth and some cars fell in the bay. so many things happened. on top of all - for my boss that time in hp labs, her dad was going to the 49ers match in candlestick and died on Stevens. when she reached home in Oakland (thinking the bay bridge would be crowded because of the match, she took the dumbarton and was saved perhaps), he home was on fire, and kids were not found for a few hours. i was like stuck in traffic for 2 hours, and like a bum, i had no gas. so, had the torture - switching the engine on and off. by the time i went into the apt, there were glass pieces all over. the tv was literally on a knife edge, oscillating. scariest of all - the swimming pool was 3/4 empty! it tilted so much, all the water overflew. and there were aftershocks till next afternoon. no phones - those days no cell phones- no phones in india also, so i sent a telegram that i am safe. after that, lot of changes in ca in construction etc now they do not build multi-tier highways anymore. oh! the beautiful beautiful sfo china town architecture was quite damaged. some of it was on fire. stanford building were highly damaged. yosemite was closed indefinitely. etc etc etc.. | ||
