source: http://www.tehelka.com/story_main2.asp?filename=Ne 051504Naidu_less.asp What we donât notice seems like a surprise when it happens. Like it is with the tdp debacle in Andhra Pradesh. As the country comes to grips with a Naidu-less Andhra, it is important to correct our sights and see what happened two months ago. In mid-March, Vijay Simha travelled across the state to write on the ground reality. What he found was astonishing. The level of anger against Naidu and the tdp was unprecedented. The issues were simple: no water, no power, no crop, and no jobs. An honest look was all that was required to see what was coming. The following are excerpts from a report in the Tehelka issue dated April 3, 2004, called âThereâs a bug in your system, Mr Computer Ministerâ. âNaidu believes he is the best. But, in what could be a nasty surprise, the people of his state are begging to differ⦠Naidu, the jewel in the nda crown, is at an all-time low in popular opinion. There is very little going for him to back the euphoria of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and his nda coalition. Across Andhra, people are standing up and asking questions⦠Anguished voices ask Naidu and his tdp where the jobs have gone. Thereâs not enough water for humans and plants, and the Peopleâs War has gained in audacity⦠To top it all, the Telangana issue has popped up again and looks set to shove Naidu out of power. What Naidu is being held accountable for is good governance â the very plank he says should see him back in power. Should majority public opinion translate into votes, Naidu could well be preparing to lead demonstrations outside the Assembly⦠The drive to transform Andhra has turned Naidu into a machine. He seems to have forgotten the way to peopleâs hearts. Consequently, the very people he professes to have dumped his family for are uniting in a vast show of anger... âAre you crazy? People will trash us if we ask votes for Naidu,â says an indignant Abdul Rahim from coastal Andhra. Coastal Andhra usually votes for tdp, but even tdp activists say this time they will vote for the Congress. Also, farmers across Andhra are livid. âWhat tdp are you talking about? The tdp is history,â says Pulla Rao in Warangal. Tehelka hit the road in Andhra, covering 1,550 kms. Barring a few pockets, the mood of the people is ranged against the tdp⦠Naidu hasnât faced a situation like this and it could be a rude awakening. Thereâs every possibility of the Congress forming the government this time. One gets the sense that something is in the air⦠Great change may be in the offing.â This was written at a time when others, like NDTV-Indian Express, were claiming that the tdp would sweep the polls. |
