Hyderabad: Banking on his experience in running eye and blood banks,actorturned-politician Chiranjeevi is believed to be keen on securing the contract to operate the 108 emergency medical transport service in the state. The emergency services are run by the state government and private partners;the former shells out 95% of the total cost.At present,the GVK group is the private operator. But the new entrant to the Congress is not alone in expressing interest: several private parties are vying to get the project.They include the Piramals,Religare and Novartis. According to sources,Chiranjeevi met Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad recently and expressed his interest in running the 108 services.Sources claimed that ministers Botsa Satyanarayana and Vatti Vasant Kumar had also talked to chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy,suggesting that the 108 services project be awarded to an outfit connected with Chiranjeevi.Chiranjeevi could not be contacted for his version. The present private operator is finding it tough to run the services,what with they being asked to repay the Rs 42 crore loan taken by the previous operator,the Satyam group led by Ramalinga Raju.Several new conditions have also been imposed on the GVK group,and a committee has also been set up to reduce the cost of operations.
