Stadium gate named after MSK

Hyderabad, May 7: The Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) has named one of the gates of the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Vizag after former Indian wicketkeeper MSK Prasad. The executive committee which met recently, has ratified the decision, ACA secretary V. Chamundeswarnath told this newspaper on Wednesday. "Prasad is the first Test cricketer from Andhra, the honour is befitting," Chamundeswarnath said.

MSK Prasad was elated. "It’s a great honour," the 33-year-old told this correspondent. "I’m grateful to the ACA, especially Mr Chamundeswarnath, for recognising my efforts. Not many are bestowed with such honour while they are alive... it’s a great feeling," added Prasad, who played six Tests and 17 one-dayers for India in the late 1990s.

The other gate at the stadium is named after former Andhra Ranji Trophy captain RBVK Prasad, who expired last year. His son RVCh Prasad is a current member of the Andhra Ranji Trophy team. Chamundeswarnath also said Deccan Chargers fast bowler P. Vijaykumar would be sent to sharpen his skills under former England bowler Mike Hendrick in Derbyshire.

"Achuta Rao will be the other Andhra bowler on the training programme to be held before the start of the Ranji Trophy season," he said. The ACA has also short-listed three U-19 players — Shiv Kumar, Prabhu Kiran and Sameer Ali Khan — for a coaching stint at the Brisbane Academy in Australia in August.

The Australian connection continues with curator Ricky Aitken, who is currently tending the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, being roped in to lay the 14 practice as well as six main pitches at the ACA-VCDA Stadium.

The ACA also decided to upgrade the facilities for its players. "We will appoint coaches in all the 13 districts (which make up the ACA) and run net practice sessions through the year. The inter-district players will now be provided with TA/DA," Chamundeswarnath said.

"Also, State blazers would be given to players in all age-group tournaments. Hitherto, only Ranji Trophy players were provided with the blazers," Chamundeswarnath said.
