Hindi film stars are bold enough to fight for a cause or voice their opinion and don’t hesitate to take on the powers that be. Why do Tollywood actors shy away? Can’t remember anyone in the recent past who has come out in the open against a wrongdoing. Director Teja is accused of slapping his actors, but not a word of protest. In fact, they don’t take a stand on anything. Rana Daggubati keeps tweeting all the time on inane issues but you never hear him take up a cause. Ditto Charan, Jr NTR and the likes. “I agree some stars from the earlier generation did speak their mind, especially my father Mohan Babu. He fought for issues he truly believed in. Sadly, our generation lacks the courage to call a spade and spade. They prefer to be politically correct,” says actor Vishnu Babu. Avnish Kumar, director of Neerus’ says, “We all know that stars do drugs, drink alcohol and smoke but they do not like to admit it in public. They perhaps are afraid their fans might believe that they are pro-drinking.” Shrenik Rao, a young documentary film-maker believes T’wood stars are very commercial.“People are more interested in their investment and the returns they get from their films, so it will be wrong to assume that the stars will be really bothered about something more than what they are earning. Tollywood’s social conscience is not really very pronounced and we haven’t seen much of it. But having said that, I am sure there is the rare star who will champion a cause without thinking of publicity,” says Rao. Actor Bharat Reddy congratulates Imran Khan for his bold stand. “Some Tollywood stars do talk about issues but many prefer to remain silent for their own reasons.
