Why buy hardware? This is the age of "cloud". Renting/leasing virtual servers is norm these days. Look at Amazon offerings for environment of your choice. |

thammud .. dont buy individual servers unless scalability is an issue for you ... usually for personal lab purpose, we dont generate so much of load .. and as other person pointed out .. too many blades too much of noise as well .. buy one powerful server (HP!!??) and install virtualization software and run the individual servers on the same platform .. this will easily scale for your personal use .... and buy licenses for individual software for virtualized usage .. done deal ... |

Tenali_rk:I am planning to buy Blade servers to set up my own server environment. I am looking to set up an app server, ETL server/Reporting server, Database server, Windows 2008/Sun Solaris/Linux. I am looking at Ebay to buy them. Any advise is greatly appreciated....
These Blade Servers or Rack Servers are designed to be installed in Data Centers and expected to cause higher noise. If it were to be hosted at your home, make sure you can bare the noise. Unless you know and have seen that server before, I strongly advise to learn about the noise levels that machine may cause. If it were for home purpose, I strongly recommend tower servers and run virtual machines. If you like DELL, thats ok. Expansion and maintenance would be expensive in long run. Alternatively, you can buy servers from some generic builders, where maintenance and expansion would be much cheaper in long run. Here is one of them: http://www.superbiiz.com/system_conf.php?preid=117 you can look for others in the market.
