Result - Nehru's party which enjoyed 200 times the strength of Mookerjee's party, 60 years later is only 1.7 times the strength of Mookerjee's party. * Trader charging double the MRP for Bt. Cotton seed triggers trouble in Jadcherla
quote:------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------- MAHABUBNAGAR: Farmers went on the rampage at Badepalli in the commercial centre of Jadcherla on Monday and ransacked three pesticide and seed shops. Stocks were looted in the three shops as well as a godown. The police had tough time controlling the unruly mob which resorted to ‘rasta roko' demanding action against the errant traders who charged above the MRP. Police resorted to lathi-charge on several occasions but senior officers warned them not to precipitate the matter. The trouble started when a farmer identified as Sankar from Nawabpet went to a shop to buy Bt. Cotton seed. The shopkeeper charged him double the price, but refused to issue the bill for the amount. When he picked up a quarrel with the shop-keeper, he was pushed out. This enraged the farmers who were present in a large number in the area. They went berserk looting stocks from the shops and damaging the shutters. All the traders managed to close the shops but some unwary merchants were caught. Farmers went on protest till evening when senior officers led by RDO Rajesham, Deputy SP Chennakesavulu and Market Yard Chairman Ramesh Reddy reached the place and pacified the farmers promising to supply cotton seed through the counters at the market yard and initiating action against the errant traders who tried to exploit farmers by charging more.
