Venkateswarlu:

she hits the screen with her tiny tiny little hand like therez no tomorrow..

LOL :-)Edo advt. chusanu TV lo - your baby can read - ani on word recognition :-)

Nothing against spelling bee, but chinnappatinunchi batti pattadam ante aversion naaku - 1st std lone ma mom to argument - when the question says "write in your own words" why should I write exactly what the teacher said ani TO me memorisation took the fun out of reading and learning:-) I never memorised spellings and I never made my kids memorise spellings either but both of them always had near 100% in all their school spelling tests-obviously these are words at their level, not Scripps level...As they read they learn to recognise what a word looks like and the spelling stays in the visual memory - and sometimes you just realise you spelt something wrong because it looks wrong :-)

A much more fun way to learn to spell than rote-learning from a dictionary :-)

That said - Spelling bee is great training on single-minded focus and other skills :-)

To learn words, some kids might take up reading.

Yes ,but most kids preparing for this spend their time reading dictionaries and thesauruses :-)If they do read books, especially fiction and fantasy , then they get the benefit of reading and spelling :-)

I remember you saying last year, you wanted to train your daughter for this contest - keep what I said in the previous sentence mind- about reading a variety of material:-)

Otherwise, there is a saying - "can't see the woods for the trees" ..
Understanding words does not mean understanding the underlying concepts and abstractions :-)Sometimes kids get hung up on the literal meaning and cannot grasp the contextual meaning :-)

Anand_n:

Reading is a different skill from spelling

Iam not saying both are same. To learn words, some kids might take up reading. Its similar to your example 'swimming'. Some might take it up and become good swimmers and have ocean activities while some just to keep the body in shape and healthy. Here too, its the parents who push the kids. I feel kids need a push and pushing necessarily doesnt mean wall-chairs, ear twisterzzz etc.. :D.

deeniki spelling bee ki chaala difference untundi, the kids are a level of being able to reason and rationalize the meaning of the word only when they reach upper middle school. most of the kids I know who involve in spelling bee preparation do not have time for other activities if they want to succeed at the highest level.

Anand_n garu cheppinattu it is the parents who push them in to it and after that it might be the interest of the kids that sustain it in some cases.

Venkateswarlu:

Why we should think parents might be pushing these kids to extra limits..

Spelling bee preparation starts in early elementary school before kids are at an age where they can understand their own passions :-) DEfinitely it is the parents pushing the kids into it :-)

Oka age vachaka kids have to have the passion to stay the course but the initial impetus for the first few years is from the parents :-)

Right or wrong, cost/benefit will depend on personal priorities - like you said training a kid for a swim team entails 2-3 hours of practise a day - training a kid for spelling bee also similar if not higher commitment of time :-)

I personally do not care much for spelling bee either :-)I thought vocab was more useful.

But still we have to give it to these kids for making such a tremendous commitment to studying words. In the process they do learn about language roots, history , culture while improving logical correlation skills too :-)
Good brain muscle-building exercise:-)

But I want to know is this pure memorisation or is there any well known procedure to spell a word based on how one pronounces it?

phonetics+etymology+language knowledge helps to certain extent. but largely memorization and exposure to the words is very important.
