http://healthland.time.com/2011/05/26/study-baked-broiled-%E 2%80%94-but-not-fried-%E2%80%94-fish-is-good-for-the-heart/ According to a new research, eating broiled or baked fish regularly reduced considerably the chances of heart failure. But, at the same time, eating fried fish led to an increase in the chances of having a heart attack. Researchers analyzed the diet report of the participants who participated in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study. The data in the diet report was self reported and the researchers found that women who consume baked or broiled fish five times in a week have 30 percent less chances of a heart failure compared to the women who consume less than once a week. The study shows that consuming fried fish even once a day decreases the failure risk by 48 percent. The scientists noted that in the earlier studies it was seen that the fatty acids found in fish, called omega-3 reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, blood pressure and blood vessel function. This study tells the relationship between eating fish and heart failure but it does not tell about the causes and effects of it. Relation between fish and heart risk The research also found that the fish which a person eats have an effect on heart. The researchers found that dark fish like salmon, mackerel, and bluefish reduces the heart disease risk in a greater manner compared to white fish like sole, snapper, and cod. In a news release study researcher Donald Lloyd-Jones said, âNot all fish are equal, and how you prepare it really matters. When you fry fish, you not only lose a lot of the benefits, you likely add some things related to the cooking processes that are harmful.â Eating baked fish is good In the research it was found that the participants who consume baked or broiled fish were healthier, younger and physically more active than the people who consume fried fishes. The participants who consume baked or broiled fish had low risk of heart disease and blood pressure. Eating fish means consuming lower fibers and higher calorie intake and leads to high BMI (body mass index). An associate professor at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine, Lloyd-Jones said, âBaking or broiling fish and eating it frequently seem to be part of a dietary pattern that is very beneficial for a number of things. In this case, we demonstrated that it's associated with heart failure prevention.â âThis suggests that fish is a very good source of lean protein that we ought to be increasing as a proportion of our diet and decreasing foods that contain less healthy saturated and Trans fats,â he said. |
