Most cable companies charge for modem. Even cox does. As rasp said, call your cable company on which models they support. Cox didnt support motorola.

Nenu naa own modem ye use chesthunna, edo Motorola model. Cable company vaadu, vaadi modem ayithey VOIP phone isthaamu annaadu, naaku akakrleadu already vonage undi ani cheppaa.

Do some research on the docsys standards and get the modem that suits your needs. detailed gaa cheppalantey, cable company uses a standard protocol to talk to your modem. As long as your modem is compatible, cable company is fine with it.

Only problem ekkada vasthundantey, if CC is using latest technology/standard and if you end up buying an outdated modem.
An idea is like a Virus.
