CONCEPT Note Background: It is said that 37 million blinds are in the world and out of which India is a home for 15 million blinds. On one hand 153 million people need reading glasses today in the country and they do not have access to it; and on the other hand every year 17 million people are being added to the population. In India blindness is growing at alarming rate and access to rehabilitation services is accessible to a very meager population. Though 75 percent of total blindness can be avoidable but due to lack of proper medical care we are unable to match with the rehabilitation services that are needed. In addition, lack of information, low cost assistive technology, unfriendly policies and stigma contributing to social exclusion that disempowered blinds at all stages and spears of life. Goal: To set up a rehabilitation and counseling center in all district headquarters starting from Hyderabad. These centers will be equipped with latest technology and information that shall cater to the needs of people with disability at all stages and spears of life. This center will also work closely with societies / families, NGOs, government, hospitals and corporate houses in order to shape policies that can empower and make blinds happy and useful members of society. About me: Due to infection I lost vision at the age of 16 while pursuing 10th standard. I was isolated for almost 5 long years because of lack of awareness and proper guidance. With the help of a friend I could complete graduation and post graduation and also learned screen reading software like JAWS and NVDA. This gave me courage and confidence to go forward in my life and also exposed me to the large public of the world. With the help of my qualification, software technologies and a good PR I could work with reputed organizations like IBM, CRS, Dr. Reddy's Foundation etc. Since then I am determine to work for the blinds at larger level that can benefit maximum people with disability. I have been invited to participate in national convention 2011 in Orlando, Florida, USA. This is conducted by National Federation of The Blind. This is one of the biggest gatherings of blinds in the world. It is estimated that nearly 3000 blinds will come together. This convention will take place from 3rd July 2011 to 8th July 2011. And it will benefit me in the following way: Best chance to meet blinds and get an understanding and knowledge from the people who are in different professions and in different countries. Understand the work of NFB and learn with their experiences. Latest assistive tools will be displayed. These products can enable a blind to lead independent life. Knowledge of latest technology is critical. Chance to develop links and contacts with different organizations and individuals working in this field will enable me to take my goal forward. Sources of funding will help me to start / support organizations / activities that can empower a blind to grow. Latest happenings keep me updated that will help me to initiate / support organization working for the blind in the field of education and research. After this convention I like to take this knowledge forward to other NGOs so that they would get direct benefit and following actions will take place: Meeting all organizations and institutions working for the benefit of persons with disability in Hyderabad (to start with). Conduct study keeping to the needs and services available. Presenting my learning to all the organizations working in this field of development through presentation and seminars. Identify and Take up those activities which are very essential to upgrade the existing organizations. Meet donors and corporate to set up model rehabilitation and counseling center at Hyderabad. There by scale up to other parts of the state. Since I could not support this travel myself that would cost around 4500 USD. I am looking forward for sponsorship for the same.
