Shaken MIM men scramble for gun licences HYDERABAD: The near fatal attack on Akbaruddin Owaisi in Old City on April 30 this year has the leaders of the MIM nervous; they are now scurrying to procure licensed weapons for themselves. At last count, at least 12 MIM corporators have applied for arms licences. Till Owaisi was attacked, MIM's dominance of the political scene in Old City was clearly visible and its leaders used to confidently move around among the people. But things have changed drastically with one of their top leaders being attacked right in the heart of his own constituency. The MIM corporators seem to feel no longer secure and most of them have now begun looking for protection. The MIM corporators who have applied for arms licences include Khaja Bilal Ahmed of Reinbazar, Shaik Shakeel Mahmood of Dabeerpura, Mirza Mustufa Baig of Riyasat Nagar and Mohammed Yousuf Naqshbandi of Lalitabagh. The majority of MIM corporators reside in the south zone of the Hyderabad police commissionerate and even among those who applied for the arms licences, 90 per cent come from the same zone. Incidentally, Barkas, where the attack took place on Akbaruddin, falls under Chandrayangutta police station in the south zone. An ACP rank officer of south zone confirmed to TOI that the MIM corporators have applied for arms licences, and he counted at least eight applications in his zone. To apply for a fresh licence, one has to send the application to thecommissioner's office and from there it gets routed to the DCP as well as the SHO concerned. So, it is possible that some more applications of the corporators are lying with the commissioner's office. City police commissioner A K Khan said: "Every month we get about 40 applications seeking arms licence. This time some corporators also might have applied, but I am sure their number is not so unusual." Joint CP (C&S) V Venugopala Krishna said that so far, the MIM corporators had not sought security personnel. But it is learnt that while corporators with no criminal history have applied for licences, those who have 'troublesome past' doubled their own personal bodyguards. MIM not to pursue politics of murder, says Asaduddin Owaisi Hyderabad: Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) will not pursue the politics of murder to avenge the assassination attempt on its leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, but wants a probe into the attack, says party president and older brother Asaduddin Owaisi. The MP was addressing a massive public meeting organised by the party at the First Lancer neighbourhood here on Saturday night to condemn the April 30 attack. "MIM never believed in the politics of murder. We don't want to turn Hyderabad into another Rayalaseema," he said referring to the bloody faction war in Rayalaseema region. He, however, said the party would give a fitting reply if the rivals resorted to another physical attack on the leadership. "If they do it again, no graveyard in the city will accept their bodies for burial," he warned. Thanking people for their prayers, which, he said, gave new life to his younger brother, Asaduddin called upon people to socially boycott elements which are committing murders and repression. Alleging a deep-rooted conspiracy behind the attack to eliminate the strong Muslim leadership in Hyderabad, he said Akbaruddin, the MIM legislature party leader, has been at the forefront of raising his voice against injustice and repression. The MP targeted editors of two Urdu dailies saying they were morally responsible for the attack. He said MIM exercised restraint even when the two newspapers published insulting cartoons of the leaders. He claimed he has all the details of who hatched the conspiracy of the attack, how many meetings were held and who attended them. Akbaruddin was stabbed and shot at in the attack by a group of 10 to 15 assailants April 30 when he was visiting his Chandrayangutta Assembly constituency. The young leader was discharged from hospital on Friday. Asaduddin said he would undergo another surgery after six weeks. Advani praises PVNR for establishing relations with Israel New Delhi Senior BJP leader L K Advani today said former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao had faced opposition from his Congress colleagues on establishing diplomatic relations with Israel as they feared this would affect their minority votebank. In his latest blog posting, Advani praised Rao for establishing relations with Israel which was "fortified immensely during the six years of Vajpayee's NDA regime. Advani recalled his visit to the US in 1992 when the Jews there asked him why India had not yet established full diplomatic relations with Israel. "My party is fully in favour of full normalisation of relations with Israel. But we are not in power. The Congress party, which has been in power for the longest period since Independence, is opposed to it, and so are the Communist parties," Advani had then told the Jewish group. Upon his return to India, Advani met Prime Minister Rao and discussed this issue. He asked why India was not establishing full diplomatic relations with Israel. "I am all for it, but my party is not ready," Advani quoted Rao as saying. Advani said he tried convincing Rao, saying India's policy towards Israel should not be "trapped in this imaginary apprehension over the reaction of some Muslims in India". "After all several Muslim countries are planning to open diplomatic relations with Israel. Egypt and Turkey have already done so. Even Palestinians want to co-exist with Israel. "Therefore, if something is in our national interest, we should explain it to people who may be opposed to it," Advani told Rao. Advani said he suggested that the country's foreign policy should be "immune to such false considerations of domestic pressure". He claimed that Rao agreed with him and formed a Group of Ministers to look into the matter and for evolving a "wider ownership" of such a decision. The senior BJP leader praised Rao for keeping his word. "The GOM made a positive recommendation. Today India has normal relations with Israel, fortified immensely during the six years of Vajpayee's NDA regime," Advani said. The former Deputy Prime Minister recently played host to a group of 61 Americans, including Jews, who were visiting India to meet the Dalai Lama. "They spent over an hour at our residence, learning how the BJP had contributed towards making India develop normal diplomatic relations with Israel," Advani said. RAJAHMUNDRY: Duvvuri Surya Rao, senior leader of Lok Satta Party, has written to the Governor, urging him to take an initiative on the issue of five-decade-old Gowtamy Vidya Peetham of Oriental language (Sanskrit) here. He said with a view to handing over the site to realtors, its buildings were razed. He wrote a three-page letter, attaching photos. Mr. Surya Rao said the Gowtamy Vidya Peetham, which had a long history, had been visited by C. D. Deshmukh, Kanchi Kamakoti Peetadhipati Sankaracharya and Bhagawan Satya Sai Baba. The institution was set up by Kandregula Jagannatha Gopala Rao. Located on a four-acre site, it was registered under 9/47 of Cooperative Societies Act and subsequently came under the control of Endowment Department. The buildings had been raised with Rs 10 lakhs from MP LADS of GVS Naidu, Rs 5 lakh of SPBPK Satyanarayana Rao, Rs.10 lakh from Rotary Club and Rs 1 lakh from China Jiyyar Swamy, he said. HYDERABAD: A drunken youth's attempt to shoot a cat with an air pistol created panic in the early hours of Saturday in Begumpet with residents mistaking it for gunfire as the pellets damaged window pane of a house. Neighbours of the house, in which a retired police Sub-Inspector's family was living, in Patigadda misunderstood bursting of the window pane in the dead of night as gunfire, and scrolls ran by Telugu news channels added to their fears. However, it turned out to be a misadventure by a youth, Rizwan, in an inebriated condition that left them frightened for a few hours. Police arrested Rizwan and three of his friends -Amanullah Khan, Zuber Shah and Nazib- who too were in an intoxicated condition, after slapping a criminal case. The four youths started consuming liquor from Friday midnight. By 3 a.m., all of them were heavily drunk when Rizwan noticed a cat lurking at the window of his house. "He and his friends thought the cat would eat off the snacks they had brought along if it came inside. Rizwan took out his air pistol and shot two pellets at the cat," the Begumpet Inspector, A. Yadagiri, said. The pellets missed the cat as it jumped and hit the window pane of adjacent house in which retired policeman, Mohd. Ali, was living.
