http://www.dawn.com/2011/04/20/cant-pakistan-and-india-be-fr iends.html THIS is apropos of a news report that said: âIndia and China have agreed to restore defence ties and will exchange visits by their top leaders, as well as take steps to enhance their balance of tradeâ (April 14). It quoted Indiaâs national security adviser Shiv Shankar Menon as saying that the two would also set up a consultation mechanism for a long-running border dispute. Both India and China fought a bitter war in 1962 and had since then been maintaining quiet and limited contacts. Lately, they realised that wide-ranging contacts could be in their interest, as well as for peace in the region and the world at large. The improvement of bilateral relations through a resolution of disputes and expansion of trade ties between India and China would be welcomed by the international community. This would certainly help maintain a peaceful environment in this volatile region. However, the same, rather more vigorous realisation is there among the people of India and Pakistan. They have a common culture and history. They believe that revival of closer relations in all fields of human activities would be immensely beneficial for their stalled progress and prosperity. They also believe that their poverty, disease and other miseries would go with the wind if they become friends once again. All successive governments in Pakistan on their part wished and endeavoured, at every level, to normalise relationship with India by resolving all outstanding issues. But, the response from the other side was never found encouraging. The recent initiative from Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh could, in fact, be seen as a silver lining in the dark cloud. He invited the top Pakistani leadership to watch the Pakistan-India semifinal of the Cricket World Cup at Mohali. The invitation was duly accepted. In fact, the invitation for the cricket match was optimistically viewed by political analysts as a means to some bigger end: an end that is linked with the destiny of the people of this subcontinent. They see some light across the tunnel. At present various secretary-level talks between the two countries are continuing. Hopefully these talks would create a congenial atmosphere for a summit meeting in the near future. Should this happen, hopefully, the cherished desire of the two peoples for friendship and revival of their old social contacts would not be a dream anymore. The people of India and Pakistan believe that if the âbitter enemiesâ of the two world wars could become âbosom friendsâ to form economic and military alliances; why canât they become friends again to bring progress and prosperity for themselves and the much-needed peace to this region. But for this, India must keep in mind that it is a much bigger and larger state. As such, it must show magnanimity and large-heartedness for the resolution of lingering disputes. we don't have a clue on what the priorities of the nation should be and add to ir our false prestige about peaceful nature and non-violence and non-aligned movement (NAM) and other BS... last year there was a contention between Supreme court and the govt about distribution of food grains to the poor people...the food grains were rotting in the FCI godowns but the govt wasn't doing enough to distribute...supreme court reprimanded the govt and pat came the reply from or PM" the courts should not decide on how the govt can shape the policy od some blah blah"... save the people of this country first and then start worrying about peace with pakistan | ||

At a time when Pakistan is facing acute shortage of electricity , India has offered to sell power at cheap rates to its energy-starved neighbour, Commerce Secretary Zafar Mehmood said today. India's offer will be discussed at the meeting of the Commerce Secretaries of India and Pakistan to be held in Islamabad during April 27-28, Mehmood told the media. However, he did not give details, including when New Delhi had made the offer. The meeting between the Commerce Secretaries is part of the resumed dialogue process between the two countries.
