HYDERABAD: As you sow, so shall you reap. Students of the Osmania University are learning this truth the hard way. Due to recurring violence on the campus which has also resulted in burning of buses, the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has stopped services plying through the campus. The students are now at the receiving end as they have to walk at least two to three kilometres in the scorching heat to catch a bus. APSRTC officials say that since the Telangana agitation started in December 2009, five buses have been torched and at least 30 more damaged in stone-pelting, causing a loss of over Rs 50 lakh to the corporation. In fact, the stone-hurling students of the OU and locals of Manikeswar Nagar forced the APSRTC management to fix iron grills to the windshields of buses. However, the grills did not seem to be of any help as students torched a Musheeerabad I depot bus near Arts College after the release of the Sri Krishna Committee report and even a relief bus which came to tow away the charred vehicle met with the same fate. After these incidents, the APSRTC stopped plying buses on the Vidyanagar-Tarnaka route via campus and Adikmet. With repeated requests from the local people, APSRTC began operating services via Adikmet from Sunday, but the campus still remains a `red zone' for the corporation and students are now facing problems getting in and out of the campus. "We cannot ply buses through the OU campus unless police give a green signal to us," APSRTC regional manager, Hyderabad, N V Rao said. However, police want an assurance from student unions. "We can only give a green signal when student union leaders give us an assurance in writing that buses will not be damaged," deputy commissioner of police (DCP), East Zone, Y Gangadhar told TOI. The Telangana student protesters, however, refused to give any such assurance. "As long as the Telangana agitation lasts, there will be road blockades. Several APSRTC buses were also targeted by outsiders. We cannot promise officials anything," OU Students' Joint Action Committee (OUSJAC) spokesperson P Kailash Neta said. OU officials stated that they cannot assure police or the RTC about the safety of vehicles as students tend to take law into their hands. Day scholars are put to inconvenience with APSRTC's decision not to ply buses. The students who used to get down in front of their respective colleges on the university campus are now being forced to walk about two to three kilometres. The students said most of them disembark at Tarnaka crossroads or Shivam Road and walk to their departments. "I spend around Rs 70 every day on auto to travel from Shankar Mutt to the Linguistics department and vice versa. Earlier, I used to travel directly from Nampally to my department," said Syeda Humera, a research scholar in Linguistics, OU. Another student, Piyush Agarwal, pursuing MBA at the Department of Business Management on the OU campus, said that students queue up before NCC gate of the campus to hitchhike to their department.
