Frodo: Terrific  It requires a twisted logic to fault a person who has scored 111 of 101 balls on a day when 8 wickets fell after him for a total of 29 runs in 52 balls. Sachin is nothing like what other Indian Icons are. He nowadays resembles an ageless run machine, who is totally in control of his game and clear on his role in the team. Unfortunately, the team- once again- seems to be letting down this maestro as he is once ( again - after 1996 and 2003) almost single handedly taking the team forward. | ||

You nailed it. Single handed backhand was the only negative in fed's game while playing against nadal.. An analogy - I believe there is very little difference in aptitude between iit topper and 500 ranker. Applying the same to tennis.. Top 4 since couple of years are neck to neck when it comes to aptitute towards the game. Only their attittude was/is the difference maker in cracking the GS. jOker used to be the torch bearer for such weak mental attittude but murray out did him in AO. I think the battle on red clay is going to be critical for no.1 this year. Novak will have to deliver atleast one big win - preferably in paris. novak is yet to beat nadal on clay or in a GS. he will have to do both of those this year to get the no.1. he definitely has it lined. he will just need to strike it, like he does his ground strokes. the advantage nole has over nadal is the double-hand backhand, which is a lot more valuable in handling nadal's insane top-spin. he will have to hit big on 1st serves and mix the 2nd smartly to make that advantage count. i am glad you liked the post, i did think you would be on cloud 9 with djokovic's red-hot form. the dudes are in southern california this week for the 1st Masters of the year in Indianwells. murray has been already knocked out by donald young. delpo is gaining speed, soda pop is popping some serious power punches. somdevverman showed baghdatis what hardwork and commitment can produce. a nice sports heaven week with the league matches winding up in the WC and this 1st masters weekend. i like your philosophy regarding the little-master-bashers! sounds very pragmatic. @chinnu : sachin is a more complete batsman than IVAR. Richards was slightly off-base when facing spin and it would be awesome to see how he would play against warne, murali, kumble, saqlain or even bhajji on a bouncy track. it definitely helped that he did not have to face marshall, roberts, garner or holding as they were in his team, but he did a terrific job against the bowlers you mentioned plus botham, imran, hadlee, not to mention he played the above mentioned WI bowlers in county cricket. I am sure having the greatest team of all time to cover your back is such a huge luxury that richards could afford to never 2nd guess his dominting methods, something sachin just never will have. keeping such ifs and buts away though, i would say IVAR is a marginally better ODI batsman than SRT, but SRT is comfortably ahead as a test batsman. Nole definitely on a different planet as of now.. he had that mental block and he got it cleared since USO semis.. however, he still has a big road block in the form of majorcan.. and this time nole has no luck on age factor as with fed.. Mentally I lost 50% interest in tennis with fed getting the beating, even though I love to see him loose.. PS: I tend not to discuss with folks who blatantly undermine the little master.. either they dont understand the game or suffered a major concussion in their recent past.. @EK : we did not lose that match because SRT slowed down as he hit the 90s. we totally abused the PP3. and zaheer, munaf and nehra forgot their brains in the dressing room when they walked out to bat. As MSD summed up, batsmen were playing for the galleries rather than focussing on finding the gaps. Gambhir and Sehwag's dismissals were downright embarrassing. Sehwag allows the ball to spin into the right hander and beyond the legstump and (this is priceless) plays a CUT shot! gambhir runs like a marathon towards the leg and hits a ball on his legs inside out? totally brain dead shots. I donot have any inside knowledge on kirsten's fetishes but I hope gary whipped their butts black and blue for those shots. un-freaking-pardonable crimes! sehwag and gambhir should be ashamed of those shots, if they hit them when playing a club match after being woken in the middle of their sleep. To have played them in the biggest league match of a WC is beyond insanity and inanity. that's like paris-hilton or bush league.gawdddddddd awful shots. I felt stupid just watching those two hits. Well ofcourse, it is a mistake if a player wastes 10balls to get to his century, but to boil down the colossal ability and impact of Sachin's batting to " he wastes precious deliveries to achieve personal landmarks " is just wrong. That's like saying Viv richards' arrogance and contempt for opposition made him lose sight of the teams greater goals. ( case in point, a needless hoick while chasing a meagre 183 in the 1983 world cup final). Exhibit B : It's like claiming Lara's eagerness to settle personal scores dented his teams chances to get one across the opposition. (any lara innings will be an example of this. Exhibit C : Sehwag/gilchrist/jayasuriya throw their wickets away because they just want to keep promoting their "fearless batsmanship" image. Exhibit D : kallis/dravid/steve waugh did not throw their bat around enough because they wanted to make sure their average stays healthy. I can go on e, f, g, so on till Z and then start with a1, b1, so on for eternity. The point is every player has their weakness or achilles' heel - they are all far from perfect, but to point those out is to point out is aking to showing up freckle on the face of catherine zeta jones/madhuri dixit/simran. You are missing the greater beauty for the minor defect. Sachin slows down at reaching a 100, so what? he still has the better average-strike rate product compared to other cricketers, if not the very best. give the amount of runs some weightage and his contribution becomes utterly immense. and lets give some preference to no. of MoM awards won and his contribution to a team becomes extremely critical. If Sachin slows down at reaching 100, it is because he has the ability to take control of the tempo of the game much better than any other batsman that has walked this planet. Gilchrist/sehwag etc can blast away, dravid/kallis can consolidate. sachin can do both as good or comparable as those 2 sets of chalk/cheese like batsmen. Given that India wins the majority of matches where SRT scores a 100, it makes sense that the dude knows when to put the team ahead of self. And please spare me the hogwash that people are selfless. We are all human and we all are afflicted by the vices of selfishness and greed. Show me a selfless individual and I will show you an hypocrite. Bottomline : Dont miss the beauty of the moon, digging for craters. Can you please quote these experts who are criticizing Sachin for placing his personal goals ahead of the team. I mean qualified players/ex-players/professional analysts of the game and not arm-chair analysts who whip out their laptops/cell phones and fire in their criticisms.
