Karnataka Govt to reclaim âlootedâ land from Gowdas February 22, 2011 2:00:25 AM Kumar Uttam | Bangalore The Karnataka Government is planning to acquire hundreds of acres of land denotified by the Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy Governments and distributed among members of the JD(S)âs first family. The moves comes in the backdrop of growing clamour over âmisuseâ of the Chief Ministerâs discretionary power in denotification of Government land and subsequent allotment to relatives and close aides. âThey (HD Deve Gowda and HD Kumaraswamy) have looted this State. We would acquire the land plots they allotted to their family members. It would be utilised for the welfare of Karnatakaâs people,â Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa told The Pioneer on Monday. Ready with a âchargesheetâ against the Deve Gowda family, Yeddyurappa indicated that he wouldnât even mind entering a legal battle with the JD(S) on this. Reports suggest Kumaraswamy denotified and allotted 286 plots during his tenure as Chief Minister. It is alleged that Deve Gowda had also allotted 46 sites to his family in Mysore. Yeddyurappa, though, did not elaborate if similar action would be taken against Congress CMs. Former CMs SM Krishna (now External Affairs Minister) and Dharam Singh had also allotted 334 and 76 similar sites, respectively, using their discretionary quota. Yeddyurappaâs move is seen as a measure to counter his involvement in a similar controversy. He has been accused of favouring his sons and daughters by allotting them denotified Government land. However, he said, âIf I had to favour my children, do you think I would have allotted just 2 acres? There was no illegality or procedural violation. If I am wrong, so are many previous CMs.â Notably, his relatives have all returned their plots. For someone who is credited with bringing the BJP to power in Karnataka, Yeddyurappa admits the âinitial confusionâ (over his survival) was mostly because he could not clearly communicate with the partyâs leadership on the entire issue. âNow, they (partyâs central leaders) have understood the whole case and endorse my point. I know I will have to change a bit and be more communicative,â he added. Yeddyurappa has also written to all BJP MPs, annexing relevant documents, to counter any offensive from the Congress or JD(S) in Parliament in the forthcoming session and afterwards. Yeddyurappa has his task cut out in Karnataka. He intends to further marginalise the Deve Gowda family, whose influence is confined to just two or three districts. Given the partyâs good performance in recent panchayat elections in areas dominated by Vokkaligas, Deve Gowdaâs community, Yeddyurappaâs political managers strongly believe JD(S) marginalisation would help BJP expand its social base. Focus would also be on projecting a âclean and pro-poor imageâ through a monthly report on performance. |
