so you have expenses and income and e>i for like 30 yrs. laloo comes around and makes e<i. that's pretty much it. how he did it is a study in a lot of places and google should help you there. traditionally, govt. monopolies tend to grow inefficient and are typically in the no-profit zone. some of them do a good job and actually turn profits. but privatizing such things as railways needs huge political will especially when it caters to BPL people more than others. most of the other privatization stuff that we have seen happen is unlike railways. who is going to maintain the tracks that often go through troubled regions etc. should it be done? absolutely and maybe in parts, like telecom. will it get done, not sure. | ||

All the govt services needs to be privatized..... 1) Passport office services should be managed by TCS,Wipro,etc 2) Government contracts should be managed by private orgs.. 3) Govt forest services 4) Police services should be managed by private orgs There would be no CM or any other ministers hereafter... Corruption can be controlled, even in India, if the Govt. , or the opposition have the will to do it. The best example is BSNL. 15yrs ago it took a lot of bribes to get a phone connection. By bringing in certain "systemic" changes, and allowing competition, now BSNL has become a lot better. Similar changes are in progress in public sector banks. In these 15yrs, politicians have not changed at all, and many other public sectors have become worse wrt corruption. So the key is to bring in systemic changes. But the fight against corruption by all political parties only revolves around "individuals", and very few talk about changes to the system, aka, better, stronger laws. | ||

how does a govt organization become profitable ? isnt it the same thing whether they are taking money directly from the govt or taking from the people in the form of higher fares? i mean think about it. to any business profit or loss depends on whether or not they recovered their revenue is more than their operating expenses. in the railways case if they are seeing that they are going to make a loss all they need to do is hike their prices. i really want to know what lalu did to make it "profitable". when there is no market competition its got to take real huge effort to turn an operation into a loss. it doesnt say much about lalu but it says a lot about others who failed to do make money in a monopoly i am not insecure. i dont need a group to oppose a lie. enemy of my enemy is not my friend | ||

the point i wanted to make was everybody wants government to be in charge of it but hold a bigger stick. 60 years of failures didnt teach us anything. why does the govt need to run railways. if private company was running it they could be taken to court for incidents like that. imagine if a reliance employee is behaving that way with customers. or an icici bank employee. or even your local grocery store owner. would the employee have a job when something like that is found out ? in the unique case of railways introducing competition wouldnt be easy because the railway tracks are limited but even there regulations and fear of losing credibility will give much better results than what we have now. but great thoughts everyone. i dont want to say i am right or you are wrong. it is just the way i look at it i am not insecure. i dont need a group to oppose a lie. enemy of my enemy is not my friend | ||

technology. issue ID cards to the handicapped. ensure their seats dont open up in the compartments unless the card is scanned. you will have stolen ones etc but that is the exception. in case hte train has no handicapped people for that trip, let the TT have an overriding card to use. whenever that is used, gets recorded and the TT gets audited. | ||

I did not read the case in the initial post but from the remaining post I garnered it is about corruption . If you need an ideal solution - Automation is the answer. The fewer hands a transaction has to go thru the better - it reduces cycle time as well as opportunity for stalling for bribes.Another is service by phone - all conversations recorded, all transactions between banks .. Are they implementable quickly ?
