If you've been out of work for a while, Google has just announced that 2011 will be its "biggest hiring year in company history." Back in 2007 it added 6,000 new employees, so the company's apparently planning to hire at least that many this year. According to Google's blog post: "We're looking for top talent—across the board and around the globe—and we'll hire as many smart, creative people as we can to tackle some of the toughest challenges in computer science: like building a web-based operating system from scratch, instantly searching an index of more than 100 million gigabytes and even developing cars that drive themselves. There's something at Google for everyone—from geo, to enterprise, to video—with most of the work done in small teams, effectively working as start-ups." It's been a while since I've built a web-based operating system from scratch or developed a car that can drive itself. And the time machine I built out of Construx and a microwave with no door when I was a kid never really worked, though the unexpected side effects of being able to read people's auras and use my body as a satellite radio antenna since then have been kind of nice.
