Germex:

First get a PAN number for yourself. I am assuming you have an NRE/NRO account with ICICI/HDFC or some bank. If not, get that one too. Then once PAN and NRE/NRO is in place, go to a website called Timesofmoney.com. they are brokers for lot of mutual funds. Initially you will have to send some paper work like address proof and then authorization etc. It is a one time thing. After that you can buy/sell MFs online using their website.

If you want to do it on a retired parent's name in India the procedure would be different.

A good starting point is to go to R2I club Finance forums and check with people who have already done it...

Thanks. I will check those.

Okatelugodu:

AS much as you research RBI rules for getting money from there...I would strongly advise you to research on IRS or check with CPA about getting money from there..

The reason why I am telling you is...if you trying to get the money that you have received from selling a house...IRS would look at it as a secondary house where you are not living..and that would be taxed differently ..also any income you earned outside the US would come under PFIC ( global income) and would be taxed differently..I think the safest bet is to go check with CPA...

A good starting point is to go to R2I club Finance forums and check with people who have already done it...

Orren:

invest in mutual funds on long long term. u can also invest in property perhaps in gated community villas (tax deductions)

u could invest in lands now in appreciation.

U can also buy ultra luxury apartments @ corner of somajiguda & rajbhavan rad facing necklace rd on top of the hill, 2.6 crores

ULTRA LUXURY APARTMENTS

u and ur wife can sit in balcony and watch necklace rd and tankbund

You can do all of the above but never tell IRS that you did any of those...lekapothe all that you have gained would be lost in taxes..to Uncle Sam

Sorry to post a personal question...but annual gaa entha range save cheddamani...why thinking about Small Savings..the reason why I am asking is...if you put in small savings/FD etc...they would just end up playing catch up with inflation and may never give you positive return in the long run...although it may be a conservative approach..you need to find something that beats inflation and gets you return greater than the growth of inflation+interest rate...aa range lo return ichevi ...stock markets/real estate matrame indialo...unless you are interested in politics ;)

If you are an NRI, you can invest in Small Savings, Post office padakams etc. You can invest in Mutual Funds but if you live in USA, you might invite PFIC regulations and might have to pay higher taxes.

The safest alternative is to invest in Equities/MF on someone's name in your family.

If you have any questions ..feel free to post here..I am not a professional financial advisor...you can search for R2Iclub forums and go to the Finance thread...if that Forum is an overkill...post here and I will try to answer if possible

I am planning to go to India in a couple of months and would like to know investment options available. Are there financial advisors available ?
